A look on Russia-imposed sanctions following Ukraine offensive

03:30pm, Friday, 04'th Mar 2022 Hespress English
From sanctions on media broadcasts, sports, business to technology, several nations demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine, in response to the Russian offensive that began February 24. Nearly 368,000 refugees have fled fighting in Ukraine for neighboring countries, including Poland, Romania, and the number “continues to rise,” according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)’s recent data. Media YouTube banned the broadcasts on March 1 of Russian state-controlled media RT and Sputnik across Europe, according to German Press Agency DPA. This move came after RT and Sputnik faced frequent criticism in Western Europe for serving as Kremlin propaganda outlets. “Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, we are blocking YouTube channels linked to RT and Sputnik in Europe with immediate effect,” Youtube’s spokesperson said, according to the same source. Sports The International Federation of Football Association ( FIFA ) announced on February 27 several measures against Russia, including the ban of the Russian flag and anthem for the upcoming sporting events, mainly the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup.
TOKYO, Japan – Japan Airlines and ANA Holdings canceled all flights to and from Europe on Thursday, March 3, and canceled or rerouted flights on Friday, March 4, as well, citing safety concerns following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine . ANA also started to cancel some flights due to run on Saturday, March 5. The airlines, which normally use Russian airspace for their Europe flights, join a growing number of carriers that have canceled or rerouted flights between Europe and north Asia in the wake of the crisis. “We are continuously monitoring the situation, but given the present situation in Ukraine and the different risks, we have decided to cancel flights,” a JAL spokesperson told Reuters. ANA Cargo’s website said the suspension of flights was due to the “high possibility of its operations not being able to overfly Russia due to the current Ukraine situation.” Airlines from the European Union and Canada have been banned from Russian airspace in response to their curbs on Russian airlines , but Japan has not made a similar announcement to date.
By Anna Ringstrom, Tassilo Hummel and Gwladys Fouche (Reuters) - French bank Societe Generale said it was working to cut its risks in Russia, fearing a tit-for-tat response by Moscow to Western sanctions, as more companies from vodka maker Diageo to IKEA suspended business in the country. Brazilian plane-maker Embraer joined Airbus and Boeing in halting parts supplies to Russian airlines, while Lufthansa said it was considering rerouting cargo flights to Asia via Alaska to avoid Russian airspace. "The war has both a huge human impact and is resulting in serious disruptions to supply chain and trading conditions, which is why the company groups have decided to temporarily pause IKEA operations in Russia," IKEA said in a statement. Broadening the spread of corporate responses, IKEA is also one of the first companies to halt business with Belarus, an ally of Russia that has played a supporting role in its invasion of Ukraine. Spirits company Diageo, the maker of Smirnoff vodka and Guinness, said on Thursday said it had paused exports to Ukraine and Russia.

Tokyo stocks close higher as US rate fears ease

08:45am, Thursday, 03'rd Mar 2022 Business Recorder
TOKYO: Tokyo stocks closed higher on Thursday, tracking gains on Wall Street on hopes that the pace of the US Federal Reserve''s rate hikes would be slower than expected. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index closed up 0.70 percent or 184.24 points at 26,577.27 while the broader Topix index rose 1.18 percent or 21.86 points to 1,881.80. The dollar fetched 115.62 yen in Asia, against 115.51 yen on Wednesday in New York. US central bank chief Jerome Powell repeated the need for increasing interest rates to ease inflation, as the US battles consumer prices that are climbing at the fastest pace in four decades, as well as soaring oil. But at the same time, Powell said he favours raising the benchmark borrowing rate by a patient quarter-point at the central bank''s meeting this month, although not entirely ruling out the possibility of more aggressive moves. "Following rallies in US shares, the Nikkei 225 was led by purchases," strategist Mutsumi Kanamori of Daiwa Securities said in a commentary. However, investors are increasingly cautious "ahead of ceasefire talks between Ukraine and Russia" expected later in the day, she added.

5G Network Deployment In The US Spawns Cluster Of Disruption

5G Network Deployment In The US Spawns Cluster Of Disruption Authored by Jon Ostrower via theaircurrent.com (emphasis ours), Something is going on with Runway 10L at Palm Beach International Airport in Florida. Last week, a Bombardier-built CRJ200 regional jet on final approach had the strangest thing happen. The aircrafts radar altitude abruptly ran down to zero, causing repeated loud aural warnings: PULL UP WHOOP WHOOP DONT SINK TOO LOW GEAR . The flight landed without incident in good weather, but it wasnt the first time. Exact same location multiple times the past two weeks, the pilot, who was on the flight deck for both anomalies, told The Air Current . The incidents were reported to the Federal Aviation Administration. Its not known definitively if the radar altimeter behavior was related to pre-deployment testing of 5G telecommunication technologies , but the unexplained incident underscored the fears of aviators, as well as the confusion and increasing disruption that is now befalling U.S. commercial aviation.

Japanese shares fall as Omicron spreads, Fed decision looms

07:42am, Tuesday, 14'th Dec 2021 Business Recorder
TOKYO: Japanese shares ended lower as cautious investors refrained from placing big bets ahead of meetings by the US Federal Reserve and other central banks, while the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant also dented risk appetite globally. The Nikkei closed 0.73% lower at 28,432.64, while the broader Topix gave up early gains to end 0.22% weaker at 1,973.81. "Caution grew among investors as lesser time remained until they hear the outcome of the FOMC meeting, which could set a path for accelerated tapering and rate increase," said Kentaro Hayashi, senior strategist at Daiwa Securities, referring to the Federal Open Market Committee. "Monetary tightening brings headwinds for the stock market." The US Fed on Wednesday is expected to signal a faster wind-down of asset purchases, while the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan will also meet to discuss normalizing their own monetary policies. Wider Asian equities also declined after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned of a "tidal wave" of new Omicron cases, and the World Health Organization said it poses a "very high" global risk.
