Shares of Hormel Foods Corp. rose 0.8% in premarket trading Tuesday, after the foods company, which brands include Planters, SPAM, Skippy and Hormel, reported fiscal first-quarter profit that matched expectations but revenue that rose above forecasts, with strongest growth in grocery products. Net income for the quarter to Jan. 30 rose to $239.6 million, or 44 cents a share, from $222.3 million, or 41 cents a share, in the year-ago period. The FactSet consensus for earnings per share was 44 cents. Sales grew 23.7% to $3.04 billion, to beat the FactSet consensus of $2.92 billion, as refrigerated foods sales rose 19%, grocery products sales jumped 48% and Jennie-O Turkey Store sales increased 15%. The increase in cost of products sold outpaced sales growth at 24.6%, to lower gross margin to 17.7% from 18.3%. The company affirmed its fiscal 2022 guidance ranges for EPS of $1.87 to $2.03 and for sales of $11.7 billion to $12.5 billion, which compares with the FactSet EPS consensus of $1.94 and sales consensus of $12.25 billion.
