Shares of AlzeCure Pharma climbed sharply on Wednesday, reaching their highest point since January 2022 after the Swedish biotech firm revealed a licensing and collaboration agreement valued at more than $2.2 billion. The deal concerns ACD856, their Alzheimer's drug candidate, in partnership with Danish firm QuantumCell.
Intraday, the stock hit 7.24 Swedish crowns before settling slightly lower but still recording a stunning jump from the previous close of 3.87 crowns. Since the beginning of the year, shares have surged over 225%, reflecting heightened market enthusiasm for the company's pipeline.
The agreement covers global rights to AlzeCure's NeuroRestore platform, which centers on their lead candidate ACD856. The initial payment sums up to $12 million, including a $5 million direct equity investment in AlzeCure at a 30% premium over recent trading averages. The contract also outlines development and commercial milestone payments alongside royalties ranging from single to low double digits.
ACD856 acts as a small-molecule positive modulator targeting NGF/TrkA and BDNF/TrkB pathways. Preclinical data have demonstrated its potential to boost neuron communication and cognitive abilities such as learning and memory. Additionally, evidence points to neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, hinting at broader therapeutic applications.
Johan Sandin, AlzeCure's Chief Scientific Officer, underscored the impressive clinical and preclinical data supporting the drug's cognitive enhancement and antidepressant effects. He described the candidate as an innovative and promising option across multiple neurodegenerative and psychiatric conditions.
Martin Jönsson, CEO of AlzeCure, emphasized the strategic significance of this deal, highlighting how the project progressed in-house from concept to clinical-stage development. The transaction is now pending customary approvals from Swedish and Danish authorities, including foreign investment clearances.
The market reaction underlines the appetite for novel Alzheimer's therapies, especially those showing multifunctional benefits. While cautious optimism prevails, the valuation jump shines a light on the premium biotech valuations can command when sizable licensing deals materialize.
With the stock breaking critical multi-year resistance levels and a hefty licensing deal inked, it'll be interesting to observe how AlzeCure navigates upcoming clinical and commercial milestones.
