Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) is making significant strides in the server market, notably encroaching on the territory long dominated by Intel (NASDAQ: INTC). Recent insights indicate that AMD’s server CPU instance market share increased by 20 basis points month over month in June, achieving a notable 21.2%. This development marks the fourth successive month of share growth for AMD, fueled by the impressive performance of its EPYC Genoa processors, alongside a revival in demand for its earlier-generation chips, including Milan, Rome, and Naples.

Jefferies analysts emphasize that AMD's ascent in the server market is not merely a fleeting trend but rather a part of a broader and consistent movement. Over a rolling six-month period, AMD’s incremental share of server CPU instances has outperformed its overall market share, underscoring robust and persistent demand. “Continued incremental share gains at AMD are predominantly propelled by the EPYC Genoa line, with supplementary support from the resurgence of its legacy processors,” the analysts noted.

On the flip side, Intel’s position appears increasingly precarious as its server instance share dropped by 30 basis points in June, now sitting at 69.2%. This decline represents the twelfth month of stagnant or diminishing market share for Intel, coupled with a striking 40 consecutive months where its six-month rolling incremental share has remained below its total share. The analysts at Jefferies observed that the pace of Intel’s share erosion has been picking up speed in recent months, despite some backing from its latest processor lines, Sapphire Rapids and Emerald Rapids.

In addition to its server market successes, AMD has also made headway in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, capturing about 13% of new AI instances added in June. This increase marks a substantial leap from AMD's overall share of just 1.4%. For traders and investors, these dynamics invite attention; as AMD gains momentum, the implications for Intel may generate potential opportunities or risks in the tech sector. Overall, the ongoing battle between these two chip magnates paints a compelling picture of the rapidly evolving landscape of the server and AI markets.
