European stock markets kicked off the day on a positive note, significantly reversing course as traders prepare for the imminent U.S. trade tariffs, set to take effect on Wednesday.

The Stoxx 600 index surged nearly 1% in the early session after a streak of four consecutive days of losses, including a sobering 1.5% drop in the previous session. Health-care and banking sectors led the charge, rising by 1.7% and 1.2%, respectively, offering a glimmer of hope to investors.

In the Asia-Pacific region, markets reflected a similar upward trend overnight, although U.S. stock futures showed signs of retreating as investors keenly await further details from President Donald Trump regarding his tariff policies. Among the most notable measures, a hefty 25% duty on "all cars not manufactured in the United States" is on the table, alongside a reciprocal tariffs plan that the President suggests will involve multiple countries, dubbing April 2 as "Liberation Day."

As traders digest these developments, they will also be closely watching the EU's inflation data released this morning. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made it clear that while the EU is open to dialogue concerning tariffs with the U.S., it is also prepared to launch retaliatory actions if needed. She emphasized the importance of approaching negotiations from a position of strength, stating, "Europe holds a lot of cards, from trade to technology to the size of our market."

Von der Leyen highlighted the EU's resolve, stating, "We have everything we need to protect our people and our prosperity." This includes the world's largest single market, the strength to negotiate firmly, and the capability to push back against what she referred to as escalatory trade disputes initiated by the U.S. She advocated for international collaboration to resolve issues like overcapacity, market imbalances, and intellectual property theft.
