European equities commenced the week on a bullish trajectory following a tumultuous end to the previous week, where the benchmark index experienced its most significant downturn in over a year.
The STOXX 600 nudged up by 0.5% as of 0711 GMT on Monday, making a recovery after posting its bleakest weekly performance since October 2023. Regional exchanges across Europe shared in this positive sentiment, contributing to the overall rise.
As traders positioned themselves for a fresh influx of economic data, all eyes turned towards upcoming consumer price indices from Germany, Spain, and France, set to be released later this week. Meanwhile, the UK is also in the spotlight with employment statistics on Tuesday and GDP figures on Wednesday, both pivotal for gauging economic health.
The European Central Bank's (ECB) monetary policy decision on Thursday is arguably the highlight of the week. Analysts anticipate a 25 basis points cut to the refinancing rate, aiming to provide a much-needed stimulus to the eurozone economy and potentially influence trading patterns across various sectors.
In sector-specific movements, technology stocks enjoyed a noteworthy uplift, rallying by 1%, which significantly contributed to the recovery of the benchmark index. The travel and leisure sector outperformed its peers, gaining 1.3%, led in part by a noteworthy 5.2% surge in Entain (LON: ENT). The British gaming powerhouse reported that the second half of the year began on a stronger note than anticipated, influencing investor confidence.
Conversely, Adidas AG (ETR: ADSGN) faced headwinds, witnessing a 3% decline after Barclays adjusted its stance on the stock from "overweight" to "equal weight," a move that has likely prompted some traders to rethink their positions.
