FDA's Curveball: Liquidia Corporation's Stock Plummets 40% Amid Regulatory Setbacks While United Therapeutics Soars

The recent announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent ripples through the market, particularly impacting Liquidia Corporation (NASDAQ: LQDA). This past Monday, the FDA decided to delay traditional approval for Liquidia's inhaled medication designed to treat various lung disorders, leading to a staggering decline of nearly 40% in its stock price before the trading bell.
The crux of the issue lies in the regulatory exclusivity currently held by United Therapeutics (NASDAQ: UTHR) for its drug, Tyvaso DPI, which will not expire until 2025. This exclusivity impacts Liquidia’s drug, yutrepia, which is intended for conditions like pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD). Liquidia's management has expressed intentions to challenge United Therapeutics’ exclusivity, but that may take time and could complicate their trajectory.
Needham analyst Serge Belanger characterized the FDA's decision as an unexpected challenge for Liquidia, labeling the situation as quite the "curveball." This setback adds to a series of hurdles that the company has faced in its pursuit to bring yutrepia to market, which had previously received only tentative approval back in 2021. Regrettably, marketing was stalled due to an ongoing patent dispute with United Therapeutics regarding Tyvaso.
On a more positive note, the FDA's recent tentative approval of yutrepia for both PAH and PH-ILD acknowledges that there is a growing need in the market for more treatment options. With both yutrepia and Tyvaso DPI being delivered via a compact inhalation device, they stand out as user-friendly alternatives to the more cumbersome nebulizers found in many households.
Interestingly, while Liquidia's shares plunged, the reaction to United Therapeutics was markedly different. Its stock rose by 6.7% to $344.31 in premarket trading, highlighting a stark contrast in the market sentiment surrounding the two companies.
