Gold Prices Gain Slightly as Dollar Weakens Before Fed Decision

Gold trimmed recent losses and inched higher on Wednesday, buoyed by a weaker U.S. dollar as markets braced for the Federal Reserve's upcoming policy verdict. With the dollar loosening its grip, bullion became more affordable internationally, giving gold prices a gentle push upward.

As of early New York trading, spot gold inched up about 0.3% to $4,038.71 per ounce, recovering from a decline of over 1% the previous day when dollar strength had weighed heavily on the metal. Meanwhile, gold futures mirrored this modest uptick, signaling cautious optimism ahead of the Fed's two-day meeting conclusion.
The broader backdrop remains complicated. The U.S. Dollar Index dipped slightly but stayed close to a recent one-month peak, keeping gold's gains in check. Investors are parsing through mixed signals about whether the Fed will maintain current interest rates or pursue a further hike, with markets assigning roughly a two-thirds chance for a pause and about a one-third chance of a 25 basis points increase.
Higher interest rates, notably if they stay elevated, tend to hurt gold by raising the cost of holding a non-yielding asset. However, the Fed's anticipated cautious stance appears to be limiting downward pressure on the metal for now.
Beyond central bank jitters, geopolitical tensions resurfaced in the Middle East. The U.S. military intercepted several ballistic missiles attributed to Iran, aimed at American forces stationed in the region. Iran's Revolutionary Guards confirmed strikes on facilities in Jordan, while allied militias and Saudi forces exchanged fire in Iraq, escalating worries about an extended conflict.
Oil prices reacted sharply, climbing over 3% amid these hostilities, after dipping in recent sessions. This surge in energy costs has amplified inflation fears, a factor that usually supports gold as a hedge against rising prices.
In the precious metals space, silver gained 1.4% to nearly $58 an ounce, while platinum edged down by about half a percent. Copper futures showed slight declines, reflecting concerns over broader economic impacts from geopolitical strife and monetary policy uncertainty.
Economic indicators lined up for release later this week, such as the personal consumption expenditures price index and employment figures, add further layers of complexity as markets attempt to gauge the Fed's next moves in response to inflation and growth signals.
For now, gold finds itself in a tug-of-war: the dollar's softness offers support, but the prospect of persistent rate hikes and the inflationary backdrop from the Middle East conflict keep investors grounded in cautious territory. Whether this balance holds or tips will depend greatly on the Fed's decision and the evolving geopolitical landscape.
