GSK's Stock Takes a 6% Hit Following US CDC Restrictions on RSV Vaccine
The stock price of GSK (NYSE: GSK) dropped over 6% on Thursday. This downturn came in the wake of new guidelines issued by a U.S. public health authority concerning the utilization of vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The fresh directives specifically narrow the scope of vaccinations. Notably, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) opted against recommending these shots for individuals under 60.
On Wednesday evening, the CDC updated its recommendations to target people aged 60 to 74 who have a higher risk of severe RSV due to pre-existing medical conditions. This move represents a setback for GSK, which produces the Arexvy RSV vaccine. According to insights from analysts at JPMorgan, the company had high hopes pinned on Arexvy to serve as its next blockbuster drug. This expectation comes as GSK faces looming patent expirations and a projected decline in revenues from its current best-selling drugs by the decade's close.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the extended use of GSK’s Arexvy vaccine for adults aged 50 to 59, marking the inaugural endorsement for that age category. Despite this milestone, the CDC’s latest restriction complicates the situation. JPMorgan analysts speculate that the consensus forecasts for Arexvy may see downward adjustments to better reflect a diminished eligible patient pool in the U.S. Additionally, the presence of competition from Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) and uncertainties surrounding the vaccine's two-year revaccination interval add further risk.
RSV often manifests as cold-like symptoms but can lead to severe conditions such as pneumonia, particularly in infants and older adults. GSK initially projected Arexvy to achieve annual sales exceeding £3 billion ($3.79 billion). Last year, the vaccine generated sales of £1.2 billion following its rollout. Given the recent developments, GSK may need to reassess its strategy in the RSV vaccine market, adjusting future sales predictions and marketing approaches.
