The Iranian military scene saw a notable reappearance this week as General Ahmad Vahidi, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was spotted attending a key meeting concerning the upcoming funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. It's his first documented public presence since early February.

Images disseminated by Iranian state media show Vahidi seated near what is likely the casket of the late Supreme Leader during a smaller, private service held recently. Observers note Vahidi's role in shaping Iran's stern negotiating position with the U.S. on peace talks has been significant.

Rumors around Iran's internal political scene focus on Vahidi's close ties with Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the younger Khamenei who's remained out of the public eye since his father's death following a joint U.S.-Israeli strike in late February. The elder Khamenei's official funeral ceremonies are slated to span several days starting Saturday, with expectations for attendance ranging from 15 to 20 million people.

Diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes, with recent talks held in Qatar involving U.S. and Iranian officials. While U.S. President Donald Trump described these as "very good meetings," firm progress remains uncertain. Both Qatar and Pakistan, mediators in the process, have labeled the developments as "positive," but cautious.

On the military front, Iran's joint command has issued warnings around the Strait of Hormuz, demanding that all oil tankers use Iran-approved routes or face potential military reaction. This threat has revived concerns about supply disruptions in the narrow waterway critical to global energy flows.

Interestingly, the Strait of Hormuz saw increased traffic last week - 258 vessels compared to 138 the previous week - despite continuing geopolitical tensions. Oil prices have also cooled off from the spikes seen after hostilities began, dropping back to levels preceding the conflict.

Vahidi's return to the public eye, paired with the funeral events and ongoing diplomatic conversations, suggests a complex period ahead for Iranian politics. How this will impact the region's stability and energy markets is yet to be seen.

Amid all this, traders watching crude energy markets can note that LCO (Brent Oil Futures) recently hovered near $71.88 a barrel, reflecting these geopolitical jitters.
