MannKind Shares Climb Following FDA's Revised Afrezza Insulin Label

MannKind Corporation (NASDAQ:MNKD) saw its shares rally 3.5% Monday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved changes to the prescribing information for Afrezza, its inhaled insulin product.
The update sharpens the guidance doctors receive when transitioning patients from injectable mealtime insulin-via multiple daily shots or pump therapy-to Afrezza's inhalable powder. Clearer instructions could make switching treatments less complicated.
Dr. Kevin Kaiserman, MannKind's Senior VP & Therapeutic Area Head for Diabetes, commented that the revised label provides practical starting dose recommendations tailored to patients' previous insulin regimens, which should make clinicians' decisions more straightforward.
Specifically, the new dosing protocols include conversion guidelines-for example, a patient on up to 3 units of injectable mealtime insulin would now start Afrezza at 4 inhaled units, while those using 8 or more units would begin treatment at 16 units. This quantifiable adjustment aims to optimize glucose control after switching.
Backing this change are data from the Dose Optimization study and the INHALE-3 trial. These studies showed improved post-meal blood sugar levels when patients switched to inhaled insulin using the new dosing scheme, giving the FDA confidence in the label revision.
Afrezza represents a unique proposition in the diabetes market as an FDA-approved inhaled alternative to injectable insulin, targeting adults with diabetes who might benefit from a non-injectable option.
Wall Street's reaction was positive but measured, reflecting cautious optimism about whether more intuitive dosing instructions will translate into wider adoption of Afrezza. The stock's bump indicates investors are keeping a close eye on MannKind's pathway to carving out a larger slice of the insulin market.
The momentum raises questions about the next moves MannKind might take to push Afrezza further into the competitive diabetes treatment arena, especially against entrenched injectable therapies.
