Nano Nuclear Energy Inc (NNE) saw its stock pop 4.2% in premarket trading following a significant regulatory nod. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) officially accepted the company's Construction Permit Application for its KRONOS MMR™ microreactor system.

This acceptance kicks off a formal review process that covers safety, environmental impact, and technical aspects tied to deploying the KRONOS MMR™ at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Interestingly, NANO Nuclear partnered with the university, which initially submitted the application back in March 2026.

Clearing this hurdle means the NRC has confirmed the application has enough detail to proceed with a full evaluation. NANO Nuclear claims the KRONOS MMR™ is the first ready-for-commercial microreactor to hit this milestone within the NRC's licensing framework.

The company projects the NRC's thorough review could wrap up by 2027. If so, construction of the nuclear microreactor at the university site might kick off in the latter half of that year, making this one of the most anticipated advances in advanced nuclear tech.

Florent Heidet, NANO Nuclear's CTO, described this milestone as the result of years of technical development and regulatory back-and-forth. He emphasized how much groundwork went into supporting such a formal review for a novel reactor design.

The KRONOS MMR™ itself is a high-temperature gas-cooled microreactor, designed to deliver power to places like data centers, factories, remote towns, mining operations, and military sites. It's compact yet packed with potential for varied energy needs.

The move by NRC to start detailed scrutiny reflects ongoing interest in advanced nuclear reactors as potential clean and reliable energy sources. It also underscores the increasing collaboration between private firms and academic institutions in this space.

With this EUA permit acceptance, Nano Nuclear Energy takes a tangible step toward realizing microreactors' commercial viability. What remains to be seen is how quickly the NRC review process will progress and whether we'll witness construction commencement on schedule in 2027.
