Nasdaq Inc. (NDAQ) is moving into the tokenized equity space with a fresh plan that aims to give public companies more authority over their shares' digital versions. This includes governance rights, proxy handling, and corporate action integration on tokenized shares - a shift intended to bring token equity closer to traditional control structures.

Earlier this year, Nasdaq outlined its intention to trade equity securities in token form, leveraging the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) for settlement. Now, it's taking a key step by partnering with Payward, the parent behind Kraken, the crypto exchange known for pushing blockchain innovations.

Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Payward and Kraken, described the tie-up as building a "liquidity layer" and underpinning applications essential for keeping tokenized equities functional 24/7 across centralized and decentralized markets. This gateway will facilitate the seamless movement of tokenized shares between regulated trading venues and blockchain networks.

This isn't Nasdaq's only blockchain move: it's also joining forces with Seturion, the pan-European platform from Boerse Stuttgart Group that specializes in settling tokenized assets. Nasdaq's European trading operations will link to Seturion to handle European tokenized securities settlements, expanding the scope of token trading and clearing on the continent.

Interestingly, the New York Stock Exchange, a direct competitor owned by Intercontinental Exchange Inc., is crafting its own blockchain-powered platform to trade tokenized stocks and ETFs around the clock. The NYSE's approach combines its existing market-making technology with private blockchain networks to execute real-time trades.

Both Nasdaq and NYSE are clearly aiming to modernize equity trading systems by embracing blockchain's promise of transparency, efficiency, and new liquidity channels. Yet, Nasdaq's collaboration with a crypto heavyweight like Kraken signals a hybrid strategy bridging traditional finance and emerging digital asset infrastructure.

Ultimately, the success of these exchanges' tokenized equity ventures will rest on regulatory acceptance and actual demand from the market for onboarded assets in token form. Whether this will lead to a broader shift in equity trading mechanics or remain a niche offering remains to be seen.

One thing's for sure: the race to tokenize equities has ignited, and both Nasdaq and its rivals are gearing up for new battles on this digital frontier.
