The CEO of Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO), Lars Jorgensen, has found himself in the crosshairs of U.S. Congress, particularly facing scrutiny from Senator Bernie Sanders. The focus of this impending confrontation revolves around the substantial prices of the company’s weight-loss and diabetes medications, which often exceed $1,000 monthly for American consumers.

During a session of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), which Sanders chairs, the senator is poised to interrogate Jorgensen regarding the stark price disparities for these essential treatment options in the U.S. compared to other nations. Specifically, the medications in question include semaglutide, branded as Wegovy for weight management and Ozempic for type-2 diabetes. Clinical data has shown that patients typically see a weight reduction of approximately 15% when utilizing these drugs.

The U.S. list prices for Ozempic and Wegovy stand at $935.77 and $1,349.02 per month, respectively—figures that Sanders argues are astronomically high when juxtaposed with their counterparts in certain European markets, priced at $59 and $92.

In a preemptive move, Jorgensen highlighted in a statement to the committee that Novo Nordisk allocated a notable $4.2 billion toward research and development in diabetes and obesity treatments in 2023. He pointed out that the landscape for insurance coverage in the U.S. is increasingly favorable, with 99% of commercial insurance plans covering Ozempic and approximately half providing coverage for Wegovy. His assertion includes the fact that over 80% of insured patients benefit from a monthly cost of less than $25, while 90% pay under $50. Clearly, Jorgensen is keen to paint a picture of accessibility amidst the price controversy.

Moreover, the CEO disclosed that Novo Nordisk has committed a whopping $30 billion to enhance manufacturing capabilities since early last year, predominantly funneling this investment into GLP-1 medications, including a substantial $4.1 billion earmarked for expanding their North Carolina facility.

As demand for Ozempic and Wegovy rises, the company has faced notable challenges, such as shortages throughout much of the year—an issue exacerbated by competition from other pharmaceutical giants like Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY). Jorgensen noted that prices for Ozempic have dropped by about 40% since their initial launch, while Wegovy has also seen price reductions for payors benefiting from discounts.

In a striking assertion, Sanders recently revealed that generic manufacturers could potentially offer alternative versions of Ozempic for under $100 a month. He has expressed concerns that such high costs could have severe implications for the American healthcare system, even suggesting they could lead to its financial ruin.

Looking ahead, Jorgensen confirmed that Ozempic is slated for government price negotiations under the Medicare program starting in 2027, contingent upon meeting certain legal prerequisites. Analysts have been informed by the company that they anticipate Medicare will negotiate pricing for both Ozempic and Wegovy in that same year.
