PhonePe Readies for IPO Amidst Market Volatility: Will Fintech's Star Rise or Fall?
Lukas Schmidt
In an exciting development for the Indian financial landscape, PhonePe, a fintech company backed by the retail giant Walmart, is gearing up for its imminent debut on the Indian stock exchanges. The announcement, made recently, outlines their strategic steps towards going public, suggesting a mature readiness for such a transition.
Founded in 2016, PhonePe celebrated its first profitable fiscal report in 2024, showcasing a remarkable turnaround. The company reported a profit of ₹1.97 billion, a stark contrast to the previous year's loss of ₹7.38 billion. Revenue surged by an impressive 74%, surpassing ₹50 billion. This robust growth trajectory positions PhonePe favorably in a market that has seen a flurry of Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in recent years.
However, despite a strong growth narrative, the broader Indian stock market has faced volatility, particularly post-October 2024, which raises questions about market sentiment as PhonePe prepares its entry. Notably, the company did not specify a date for its IPO, keeping traders on their toes regarding potential timelines.
PhonePe has established itself as a dominant player in the digital payment sector in India, boasting a staggering 48.4% share of transactions on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as of January 2025. With over 590 million registered users and a network of more than 40 million merchants using its platform, its daily transaction volume exceeds 310 million. Such figures indicate PhonePe’s central role in India’s rapidly growing digital economy.
The competitive landscape features similar players, notably Paytm (NSE: PAYTM), which previously attempted to tap into this market with its own IPO. Unfortunately for Paytm, its shares have since declined significantly from their initial debut price. This backdrop could either dissuade investors or present an enticing opportunity for those keeping a close watch on the fintech space.
As traders prepare to navigate the upcoming IPOs and the potential of PhonePe’s public offering, it will be crucial to constantly evaluate market conditions as well as the fintech sector's performance. PhonePe’s entry may very well shape the narrative of digital finance in India, paving the way for both challenges and opportunities in this dynamic market.
