Rani Therapeutics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:RANI) saw its stock price surge by an eye-popping 148.3% in premarket trading this Friday, seconds after announcing a fresh partnership with Japan's Chugai Pharmaceutical. The deal comes with a $60.3 million private placement to back its clinical-stage biologics tech.
The partnership has Rani receiving a $10 million upfront payment and positions it to collect up to $75 million more in technology transfer and development milestones. On top of that, the agreement could generate up to $100 million in sales milestones and includes single-digit royalties on future product sales.
At the heart of the collaboration is Rani's flagship RaniPill technology, designed for oral delivery of biologics, which Chugai plans to pair with its own rare disease antibody. The deal also holds options for Chugai to add rights on up to five more drug targets under similar terms, potentially lifting the total contract value beyond $1 billion.
In a statement, Rani's CEO Talat Imran highlighted the strategic fit, emphasizing how the tie-up combines Rani's innovative oral delivery platform with Chugai's prowess in global antibody research and commercialization.
Parallel to the deal, Rani secured $60.3 million through a private placement led by Samsara BioCapital and supported by investors such as RA Capital Management and the company's founder Mir Imran. The combined funding from the upfront payment and anticipated technology milestones is expected to bankroll operations through 2028.
This development is a big leap for Rani Therapeutics, which has been carving out a niche in potentially transforming the biologics administration landscape by moving injections to pills. The scale of the deal with a heavyweight like Chugai could validate its platform's potential in clinical applications.
One should note, though, that despite the massive premarket spike, Rani has yet to bring a commercial product to market, and the deal's full value will unfold over multiple years contingent on successful milestones and new drug development.
This move adds fresh excitement to Rani's story amid an industry hungry for non-invasive biologics delivery. It also raises the stakes on how quickly and effectively Rani can translate its technology into approved therapies.
Considering all this, it's a prime example of how clinical-stage biotech firms can dramatically shake up their narrative once big partnerships with pharma giants materialize.
