Russian Drone Strike Injures Two in Romanian City Near Ukraine Border

Romania, a NATO and EU member, faced a significant security breach after a Russian drone struck a 10-storey apartment building in Galati, a city close to the Ukrainian border. This marks the first time the conflict's impacts have directly injured civilians on Romanian soil.

The explosion on the rooftop injured two residents - a woman and her child who were hospitalized with minor injuries, while others suffered panic-related trauma. The blast also led to a fire in one apartment and damaged multiple vehicles parked near the building.

Romanian defense officials revealed that the country's airspace has been violated by Russian drones at least 28 times since the conflict began, with drone debris recovered on 47 separate occasions. Despite multiple incursions, Romania had not previously experienced injuries from these attacks.

Authorities responded by deploying two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter to monitor aerial threats, with pilots authorized to down any threatening drones. However, Romanian law permits shooting down drones only if they pose immediate risks, a measure not yet exercised before this incident.

Deputy Interior Minister Raed Arafat reported the drone caused structural damage by blowing out stairwells in the building. Radar lost track of it shortly before impact due to its low flight path, illustrating the challenges in intercepting such small, low-flying threats.

In a related event, a large drone without explosives was discovered in a northwestern region of Romania, triggering security protocols as investigations into its origin continue. The drone had a wingspan of approximately three meters, raising questions about its intent and operator.

Meanwhile, just across the border in Ukraine's Odesa region, the Izmail port was targeted by multiple drone strikes, highlighting ongoing hostilities in this strategically vital area along the Danube River.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Toiu condemned the strike as a "serious violation of international law and Romania's airspace," informing NATO and ramping up calls for accelerated provision of anti-drone defenses. The episode underscores the fragile security situation along NATO's eastern flank amid the protracted Russia-Ukraine war.

The proximity of these incidents to NATO territory and civilian populations adds a new dimension to the conflict's risk profile, potentially complicating the geopolitical calculus as tensions simmer in Eastern Europe.
