Samsung Electronics (KSE:005935) just dropped jaw-dropping numbers for its second quarter, boasting an operating profit of 89.5 trillion won ($62 billion). That's a nearly 19-fold jump from the same period last year, fueled largely by soaring demand for memory chips geared toward AI data centers.

The revenue picture also painted rosy hues, hitting 171.5 trillion won-130% higher than last year. Net profit followed suit with a nearly 1,300% leap to 71.6 trillion won. These figures synced well with market forecasts, underscoring a blockbuster quarter for the South Korean tech titan.

Despite this stellar performance, investor sentiment in South Korea took a hit midweek, as stocks like Samsung plummeted more than 12%, with SK hynix suffering steeper declines close to 20%. The jitters stem from worries that the AI chip hype might be losing steam and whether such stratospheric profit expectations are sustainable.

Samsung's memory business, a core profit engine, claimed a "record-breaking quarter," mainly driven by server-grade products brewing high demand. The company's CFO, Park Soon-cheol, forecasted that the global memory chip shortage would intensify through 2027 and maintain tightness into 2028, hinting at further challenges ahead.

On the production front, Samsung's new Texas chip facility is on track for this year's launch, with plans for a second plant kicking off in 2026 and aiming for full production by 2030. These expansions are critical for keeping pace with the AI boom and bolstering capacity.

Partnerships are also in focus. Samsung recently inked a "strategic collaboration" with Broadcom to supply cutting-edge memory solutions, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, to support next-generation AI accelerators. This deal could breach $200 billion over five years, indicating Samsung's push to pull in customers beyond Nvidia, a longtime SK hynix HBM client.

Amid these moves, Samsung brushed off speculation about a US listing or immediate capital raises, citing strong cash flows that keep the company well-armed financially. Meanwhile, South Korea's government sees the semiconductor surge as a "golden window" to ramp up investments, backing an 800 trillion won plan for new fabrication plants alongside SK hynix.

Still, some analysts caution about timing. The massive Gwangju fab project is a long haul, and there's a looming question of whether the semiconductor supercycle will have already peaked by the time it comes online. The AI chip race is fast and fierce, but the finish line remains unclear.
