Stellantis Issues Recall for Over a Million U.S. Vehicles Due to Power Steering Risk

Stellantis is pulling more than 1 million Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator models off the roads in the U.S. to fix a power steering wiring flaw that can overheat and potentially trigger fires, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These affected trucks and SUVs cover model years from 2021 through 2025.

What's particularly unsettling is that the defect can result in fires even after the vehicle is shut off and parked. The source of the problem lies in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring which may get dangerously hot.

Owners of these vehicles are being offered free inspections and replacements of any faulty parts by dealers, aiming to nip the issue in the bud before anything serious happens.

But that's not the only headache for the Chrysler parent company this month. Another recall involves about 17,300 U.S. cars facing battery pack defects that carry a similar fire risk-even when the vehicles aren't running.

This comes hot on the heels of a previous campaign where Stellantis recalled over 419,000 vehicles due to side airbags that might not deploy correctly during crashes. It's turning into quite a string of recalls.

The recalls put a spotlight on vehicle safety and quality control challenges in an era of increasingly complex automotive technologies. Electric and hybrid components seem to pose unique risks compared to traditional parts, stirring questions about testing and durability.

From a market perspective, Stellantis' stock STLAM has moved modestly amid these developments. Recalls of this scale tend to stir caution among analysts and buyers alike, with potential for direct costs from repairs and indirect blows to brand reputation.

The automotive sector has been grappling broadly with supply chain hiccups, inflationary pressures, and shifting consumer demands. Add to that the technical snafus revealed by these recalls, and manufacturers have their work cut out for them.

With more consumers relying on advanced electronic features, the balance between innovation and reliability remains a tightrope walk for carmakers. How Stellantis navigates this chapter might offer some clues on the challenges facing the wider industry.
