The rise in U.S. Treasury yields on Thursday has stirred the market, as traders keenly await forthcoming economic indicators while processing the recent tariff proposals from U.S. President Donald Trump.

As of 5:22 a.m. ET, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury climbed over six basis points, reaching 4.31%. Meanwhile, the 2-year Treasury yield also saw a modest increase, up more than four basis points, settling at 4.112%. This uptick comes during a week already bustling with data releases, including vital housing metrics and consumer confidence evaluations.

Investors will soon receive fresh data at 8:30 a.m. ET, specifically concerning durable goods orders for January, alongside the GDP growth rate from the last quarter of 2024. These figures will provide critical insights into the economic landscape, helping traders gauge the pace of growth previously recorded.

All eyes are, however, on the highly anticipated personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index set for release on Friday morning. As the Federal Reserve’s favored inflation measure, the PCE will likely influence traders' strategies as the Fed gears up for its next monetary policy meeting on March 18-19.

On a different note, the market's mood is mixed in light of President Trump’s latest tariff threat, revealed during his inaugural Cabinet meeting of his second term. The president has indicated plans to enforce a 25% duty on imports from the European Union, with additional tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico expected to commence on April 2.

“We’ll be announcing it very soon,” Trump commented to the media, confirming that the 25% tariff will broadly apply to automobiles and other products, sending ripples of concern throughout the trading community.

For stock traders, staying attuned to these developments is essential, as shifts in yield and potential trade barriers may significantly affect market dynamics and investment strategies.
