In a significant move reflecting its strategy post-acquisition, UBS (SWX: UBSG) is parting ways with its stake in Swisscard, a credit card provider initially integrated into its operations following the acquisition of Credit Suisse’s assets. In a recent announcement, Swisscard disclosed that UBS will divest its 50% ownership interest in the company to its joint venture partner, American Express (NYSE: AXP). While specifics regarding the financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed, the deal will result in American Express taking full control of Swisscard.

This move signifies a pivotal shift as all Credit Suisse customers will soon transition to utilize UBS's existing credit card infrastructure. Notably, Swisscard reassured that it will retain the ability to issue cards under established licenses for major brands such as American Express, Mastercard (NYSE: MA), and Visa (NYSE: V). The operational integrity of American Express's services in Switzerland will remain undisturbed despite the ownership changes.

UBS's decision comes as part of a broader strategy of divesting segments of the business acquired through its emergency purchase of Credit Suisse amid the latter's financial turmoil last year. This isn’t the first such transaction; UBS previously divested interests in Credit Suisse Securities in China and its insurance-linked investment sector.

The banking giant underscored its commitment to its credit card division even as it delineates its strategic priorities, asserting that maintaining a stake in Swisscard didn’t fit neatly into its operational framework as the successor to Credit Suisse. Current cardholders need not worry; they will be notified about the transition regarding their Credit Suisse branded cards in early 2025, ensuring a smooth shift without any immediate ramifications for users or merchants.
