Walmart Raises Prices on Central America Imports Amid Tariff Surge, Targets Holiday Season Gains

Walmart (NYSE: WMT) is already feeling the heat from the latest round of tariffs, with product prices on the rise. After a briefing with the retailer's head of investor relations, Steph Wissink, Jefferies reported that since April, Walmart has been hiking prices on perishables and other goods imported from Central America.

What's interesting is that in June, price increases crept into less frequently bought general merchandise items that had been seeing downward price pressure before. And with the Halloween and holiday seasons approaching, Walmart indicated that price bumps will continue, especially on seasonal products.

Walmart's game plan remains to stick to its "Everyday Low Price" approach, aiming to keep price hikes smaller than those of its competitors. Despite rising costs, they seem confident the U.S. consumer isn't backing down just yet - though there are signs of shoppers switching to cheaper alternatives.

The company is gearing up for the back-to-school rush by widening price gaps on popular, frequently purchased goods. The strategy suggests Walmart expects more price-sensitive buyers this season and is banking on volume gains as consumers hunt for deals.

Inventory levels are also set to spike in Q2, in part because the actual tariff rates turned out to be steeper than anticipated. Analysts at Jefferies don't see this as a red flag for Walmart's inventory health, though it highlights a more expensive supply chain.

While tariff-induced price hikes limit short-term upside, Walmart is expected to stick close to its full-year forecast. The retail giant's balancing act between absorbing some cost and passing some to consumers looks to be under watch as the tariff saga unfolds. Whatever happens, Walmart's moves are a real-time case study in navigating inflation through a tariff-driven squeeze.
