Wizz Air to Equip Fleet with Starlink Internet Starting 2027

Wizz Air is gearing up to upgrade the way its passengers stay connected in the skies. Beginning in 2027, the budget airline will roll out internet service powered by Elon Musk's Starlink system across all its aircraft. This makes Wizz Air the first ultra-low-cost carrier in Europe to tap into Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi.

While specific details about the agreement between Wizz Air and Starlink's parent company, SpaceX, have not been released, the timing is notable as SpaceX prepares to go public this week. Starlink has already made inroads with several major American airlines including American Airlines, United, Southwest, and Alaska, as well as long-haul carriers like Singapore Airlines and Emirates.

It's worth noting that other European budget carriers are cautious about the potential expenses involved. Ryanair's CEO Michael O'Leary has been vocal, estimating that implementing Starlink could cost his airline up to $250 million annually once fuel penalties are factored in. Similarly, EasyJet has mentioned the steep cost hurdles associated with satellite internet on planes.

Despite these concerns, Wizz Air seems confident enough to move forward. The airline recently shared that it expects to break even or post modest profits for the 2026 fiscal year, which ended March 31. Passenger numbers climbed 26% in May alone, helping push revenue forecasts upward for the summer - a period often impacted by geopolitical tensions like the ongoing Iran conflict.

This push towards satellite internet could enhance Wizz Air's appeal in an increasingly competitive airline industry where onboard connectivity is becoming a must-have for many travelers. Whether Wizz Air's gamble on Starlink will pay off in terms of passenger loyalty or operational costs remains to be seen.

With SpaceX going public soon, investors will be closely watching how deals like this affect both companies' fortunes. For now, Wizz Air's move could signal growing acceptance of satellite-based Wi-Fi in budget aviation, despite the cost debates swirling among peers.

As this story unfolds, it adds another interesting chapter to the intersection of aerospace tech and commercial aviation economics.
