Russian oil sanctions could see fuel prices skyrocket

02:08pm, Monday, 07'th Mar 2022 Herald Sun Australia
6PR’s Oliver Peterson says a ban on Russian oil could result in fuel prices of $3 a litre. “We’ve seen the moves from the likes of Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Google, IKEA withdrawing or shutting down their operations in Russia,” Mr Peterson said. “If we do the same with oil, the Russians produce about 11 per cent of the global oil supply, $2.15 a litre for unleaded – that is probably going to be cheap if we go down this path for the next 6 months of so. “We’re probably going to hit $3 a litre.”

Russia Set To Open Humanitarian Corridors In Ukraine

09:43am, Monday, 07'th Mar 2022 Global Village Extra
Ukrainian refugees walk a bridge at the buffer zone with the border with Poland in the border crossing of Zosin-Ustyluh, western Ukraine on March 6, 2022. Daniel LEAL / AFP Russia has agreed to open humanitarian corridors to allow the evacuation of civilians from several Ukrainian cities experiencing heavy fighting, including the capital Kyiv and the besieged port city of Mariupol. “Russian forces, for humanitarian purposes, are declaring a ‘regime of silence’ from 10:00 am on 7 March and the opening of humanitarian corridors,” the Russian defence ministry said in a statement. It listed evacuation routes from the capital Kyiv as well as Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy — all of which have been under heavy Russian attacks in recent days. Moscow said the decision was taken after a “personal request” by French President Emmanuel Macron to Russia’s Vladimir Putin. The pair spoke on Sunday in their fourth conversation since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th. Moscow said it had informed the UN, the OSCE and other international organisations of the corridors and called on Ukraine to “strictly fulfil all the conditions” of the evacuations. “We expect concrete actions from the official Kyiv authorities, as well as from the leadership of the above cities mentioned,” it said.

Russia''s military will hold fire and open humanitarian corridors in several Ukrainian cities on Monday, the Defence Ministry said, after fighting halted weekend evacuation efforts and civilian casualties from Russia''s invasion mounted. The corridors were to be opened at 10am Moscow time (0700 GMT) from the capital Kyiv as well as the cities of Kharkiv, Mariupol and Sumy and are being set up at the personal request of French President Emmanuel Macron, the ministry said. According to maps published by the RIA news agency, the corridor from Kyiv will lead to Russian ally Belarus, and civilians from Kharkiv will only have a corridor leading to Russia. Corridors from Mariupol and Sumy will lead both to other Ukrainian cities and to Russia. Those who want to leave Kyiv will also be able to be airlifted to Russia, the ministry said, adding it would use drones to monitor the evacuation. "Attempts by the Ukrainian side to deceive Russia and the whole civilised world … are useless this time," the ministry said.

Russia hits Ukraine from air, land and sea

05:44am, Monday, 07'th Mar 2022 Economic Times India
Russian forces pummelled Ukrainian cities from the air, land and sea on Monday, with warnings they were preparing for an assault on the capital Kyiv, as terrified civilians remained trapped in besieged Mariupol. The relentless fire has pushed more than 1.5 million people across Ukraine''s borders as refugees, though many others are displaced internally or trapped in cities being reduced to rubble by Russian bombardment. International sanctions intended to punish Moscow have so far done little to slow the invasion, and Washington said it was now discussing a ban on Russian oil imports with Europe. The comments sent the price of Brent crude soaring to near a 14-year high, with markets in Tokyo and Hong Kong slumping. On the ground, air sirens sounded in cities across the country, including the capital Kyiv, and intense aerial bombardment continued in the city of Kharkiv, which has endured almost non-stop fire in recent days. "The enemy continues the offensive operation against Ukraine, focusing on the encirclement of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mykolayiv," the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said in a statement.

Ukraine says evacuations stall amid Russian shelling

05:02am, Monday, 07'th Mar 2022 New Haven Register
LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians attempting to flee to safety were forced to shelter from Russian shelling that pummeled cities in Ukraine’s center, north and south, leaving corpses in the streets. As Ukraine officials described a “catastrophic” situation during failed evacuation efforts in Kyiv’s suburbs, officials from both sides planned a third round of talks Monday. On the outskirts of the capital Kyiv, a roller suitcase sat upright next to dead bodies. A Russian rocket attack in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, left a car collapsed, a pile of rubble and another man dead. Ukrainian officials said the shelling only worsened as darkness fell Sunday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed to fight on, urging his people in a weekend television address to take to the streets to “drive this evil out of our cities, from our land.” “Instead of humanitarian corridors, they can only make bloody ones,” Zelenskyy later said Sunday, referring to an attempt to evacuate civilians that fell apart because of Russian bombing. “Today a family was killed in Irpin.
