Daniel LEAL / AFP Russia has agreed to open humanitarian corridors to allow the evacuation of civilians from several Ukrainian cities experiencing heavy fighting, including the capital Kyiv and the besieged port city of Mariupol. “Russian forces, for humanitarian purposes, are declaring a ‘regime of silence’ from 10:00 am on 7 March and the opening of humanitarian corridors,” the Russian defence ministry said in a statement. It listed evacuation routes from the capital Kyiv as well as Mariupol, Kharkiv and Sumy — all of which have been under heavy Russian attacks in recent days. Moscow said the decision was taken after a “personal request” by French President Emmanuel Macron to Russia’s Vladimir Putin. The pair spoke on Sunday in their fourth conversation since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24th. Moscow said it had informed the UN, the OSCE and other international organisations of the corridors and called on Ukraine to “strictly fulfil all the conditions” of the evacuations. “We expect concrete actions from the official Kyiv authorities, as well as from the leadership of the above cities mentioned,” it said.

Russia''s military will hold fire and open humanitarian corridors in several Ukrainian cities on Monday, the Defence Ministry said, after fighting halted weekend evacuation efforts and civilian casualties from Russia''s invasion mounted. The corridors were to be opened at 10am Moscow time (0700 GMT) from the capital Kyiv as well as the cities of Kharkiv, Mariupol and Sumy and are being set up at the personal request of French President Emmanuel Macron, the ministry said. According to maps published by the RIA news agency, the corridor from Kyiv will lead to Russian ally Belarus, and civilians from Kharkiv will only have a corridor leading to Russia. Corridors from Mariupol and Sumy will lead both to other Ukrainian cities and to Russia. Those who want to leave Kyiv will also be able to be airlifted to Russia, the ministry said, adding it would use drones to monitor the evacuation. "Attempts by the Ukrainian side to deceive Russia and the whole civilised world … are useless this time," the ministry said.

The latest fighting blocked efforts to evacuate 200,000 people from the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol for a second day in a row on Sunday.

"We are compelled to act following Russia''s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, and the unacceptable events that we have witnessed," Visa Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Al Kelly said in a statement.

The moves follow a number of other Western companies including Nike, Ikea, and Hermes, which closed shops or offices or ceased operations as trade restrictions and supply constraints added to pressure to stop business in Russia.
