Is BP Providing A Blueprint For Big Energy?
07:00pm, Thursday, 10'th Feb 2022 OilPrice com
By bolstering a select few oil operations and pumping funds into renewable energy projects, BP is already emerging stronger in the early days of its transition. This week, BP reported its highest profits in 8 years as the company says it is “performing while transforming”. BP announced that it has experienced a huge full-year net profit, supported by high commodity prices. The British energy firm has reported an underlying replacement cost profit of $12.8 billion for 2021, following a net loss of $5.7 billion in 2020. Bernard…
The Guardian view on windfall taxes: an idea whose time has come again | Editorial
06:50pm, Thursday, 10'th Feb 2022 The Guardian
Labours Ed Miliband is right to call for a one-off increase in corporation tax on North Sea producers to fund lower bills for consumers Windfall taxes are nothing new. Margaret Thatchers government was one of the most notable users of the tactic with one-off levies on banks and oil companies for making excess gains in the early 1980s. Perhaps the fact that such duties find favour with the public surprises some who think economic populism is passé. But with gas prices trebling and the bosses of fossil fuel companies proclaiming cash machine profits, surely Labours Ed Miliband is right to call for a one-off increase in corporation tax on North Sea producers to fund lower bills for consumers. Big oils claim that it is paying its fair share to the Treasury is not credible, given that handouts from the state have often actually exceeded the tax take that the industry generates. Between 2018 and 2020, Shell and BP, which together produce more than 1.7bn tonnes of greenhouse gases a year, paid no corporation tax or production levies on North Sea oil operations and claimed tax reliefs of nearly £400m.

08:00am, Thursday, 10'th Feb 2022 The Guardian
The oil giant revealed its four-fold increase in profits alongside pledges on investment in cleaner energy When BP revealed this week that bumper profits had reached an eight-year high, helped by the same soaring gas prices that have fuelled a national cost of living crisis, it had a political sweetener already prepared. The oil firm revealed the four-fold profit increase to $12.8bn alongside a promise to spend more on low-carbon energy alternatives, and invest more than £2 for every £1 it made in Britain this decade.
