Merger activity increased last week with six new deals announced and six deals completed. Three of the six new deals announced were potential deals in the works. Healthcare Trust of America (NYSE: HTA ) Founded in 2006, Healthcare Trust of America is a healthcare focused REIT and the largest operator of dedicated medical office buildings (MOB) in the United States. The company owns real estate though 461 on-campus and off-campus properties around hospitals and Universities in 32 states. We added HTA to our ‘Deals in the Works‘ tool on October 6, 2021, when Bloomberg reported that activist investor Elliott Investment Management was pushing for the company to launch a strategic review that included a potential sale of the company. The price of HTA was $30.02 before the announcement. On February 28, 2022 HTA announced that it is combining with Healthcare Realty Trust Incorporated (NYSE: HR ) in a cash plus stock deal. Warren Buffett has been absolutely hoovering up stock in Occidental Petroleum ( OXY , $56.15). In a flurry of recent purchases, Berkshire Hathaway ( BRK.B , $325.34) bought 91 million OXY shares, or 9.8% of the integrated oil and gas company''s shares outstanding. The addition to the Berkshire Hathaway equity portfolio coincides with the ongoing melt-up in energy prices, which was sparked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Global benchmark Brent crude oil futures briefly topped $130 a barrel in the wee hours of Monday trading, and have gained about 30% over the past month. Buffett received the warrants as an equity "kicker" when he bought the preferred shares in 2019.

The self-imposed embargo of Russian oil is spreading to Kazakhstan crude, with three shipments canceled in the past 24 hours. The Wonder Vega, Free Spirit and Stealth Haralambos, all Marshall Islands-flagged vessels, were Black Sea-bound for the Port of Novorossiysk. S&P Global informed clients of the three canceled loadings, citing the war risk premium associated with the grade of oil. These latest cancellations led the Chevron-led consortium at Tengiz — Kazakhstan’s highest-producing oil field — to issue a statement that it was “monitoring developments.” Production is continuing, according to the consortium. Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates LLC, told American Shipper that Kazakhstan crude oil, which is the light sweet variety like Brent and WTI, is trading at a discount. The crude is currently being offered at a $9-per-barrel markdown to Brent.
