The National Hurricane Center says tropical storm Gabrielle has just crossed the line into hurricane territory - the second hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season.

At the last advisory Gabrielle was centered roughly 320 miles (515 km) southeast of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds about 75 mph (120 km/h) and stronger gusts. For the record, the hurricane threshold is 74 mph of sustained wind, so this was a tight but official upgrade.

The NHC's track puts Gabrielle passing east of Bermuda on Monday evening. Their forecast calls for steady to rapid strengthening over the next 24-48 hours, with the storm likely to intensify into a major hurricane early next week.

What this means for markets: a tropical cyclone in the mid-Atlantic tends to create short-lived ripples across a handful of sectors. Reinsurance and insurance-linked instruments often show increased volatility given Bermuda's role as a global reinsurance hub. Energy markets can wobble if shipping lanes or offshore operations face disruptions - even the rumor of interrupted flows can nudge crude and natural gas prices. Shipping and logistics firms can see rate noise if transatlantic routes are rerouted, and tourism-related names tied to Bermuda could get a day in the headlines.

There's also the usual safe-haven choreography: gold and the dollar sometimes stiffen, while volatility gauges can tick higher as traders price in uncertainty. How big those moves will be depends on Gabrielle's eventual path and strength; intensification forecasts mean traders will be watching storm models and radar updates closely.

Gabrielle's positioning - southeast of Bermuda, 75 mph winds, potential rapid intensification - is the story for now. Will it fizzle, detour, or become the season's headline maker? That's still up in the air.
