McDonald’s Launches $5 Value Meal to Boost Foot Traffic Amid Competitive Fast-Food Market

McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) has unveiled its much-awaited value meal. As of Tuesday, the Golden Arches have introduced a $5 meal deal that features a McDouble burger or McChicken sandwich accompanied by four chicken McNuggets, small fries, and a small soft drink. According to McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger, the company's efforts are to provide affordable choices to entice customers back into their restaurants.

This strategic move follows a challenging first quarter, during which US same-store sales rose by 2.5%, falling slightly short of the anticipated 2.55%. The company also experienced underwhelming performance in revenue growth, earnings, and same-store sales across its various segments.

According to a McDonald’s franchisee who chose to remain anonymous, there are expectations that the limited-time value deal will boost foot traffic in McDonald’s outlets, although margins might take a hit. “Value promotions never increase margins — never,” the franchisee mentioned. “They do drive guest counts. Hopefully, the increase in guest counts will offset the slimmed-down margins.” TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that while the value meal may draw customers in, pushing premium or additional items is crucial for enhancing profitability.

The timing of this initiative is particularly noteworthy. McDonald's seeks to change the perception that its offerings have become too pricey. To address this, Erlinger posted a blog highlighting the cost increases of popular items like the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder, which have seen an average price hike of about 20% since 2019.

As competition intensifies in the fast-food industry, McDonald's isn’t the only chain embracing value meals. Earlier in April, KFC (NYSE: YUM) launched a $4.99 meal featuring two pieces of chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, and a biscuit. Subsequently, in late May, Burger King (NYSE: QSR) reintroduced its $5 Your Way Meal, which offers a choice of Chicken Jr., Whopper Jr., or Bacon Cheeseburger, along with fries, nuggets, and a drink.
