Micron Technology (MU) leapt almost 7% in early trading today, boosted by a fresh wave of optimistic analyst reports centered on artificial intelligence-driven memory demand. This came after a recent dip in memory stocks had left investors wary.

Morgan Stanley's Joseph Moore highlighted the current memory sector slump as a prime buying moment, citing escalating data center memory shortages and forecasting a roughly 25% rise in third-quarter memory prices compared to the prior quarter. This projection reignited enthusiasm around Micron's prospects.

The company enjoys a strong buy consensus with about 50 analysts covering the stock, averaging a price target north of $1,540. KeyBanc recently upgraded its outlook to Overweight and nudged their price target up to $1,750. Meanwhile, UBS tempered expectations about the duration of this memory supercycle due to potential AI-driven pricing pressures but still sees overall memory demand surging 50% to 60% next year, with AI demand possibly doubling.

Additionally, UBS anticipates Micron will initiate substantial buybacks, potentially repurchasing over 40% of its shares by 2028 once buyback restrictions lift in late 2026. This potential capital return strategy adds fuel to the rally.

Micron's competitive dynamics are underscored by comments from SK Hynix's chairman describing current AI-driven memory prices as "abnormally high," a signal of powerful pricing leverage in the chip market. The broader chip segment also saw some rebound as concerns about elevated capital expenditures at TSMC and new AI chip design models recently rattled investors.

High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) usage in AI training and inference remains tight. Micron has already stated its HBM supply for 2026 and 2027 is completely booked. This scarcity contributes to Micron's pricing power and profitability outlook.

Market indicators today reflect a firmer risk mood: Nasdaq futures rose about 1.4%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.5%, showing cautious optimism ahead of heavy earnings season. Micron's rise to approximately 6% gain in pre-market action aligns with this broader positive sentiment.

Combine all these factors, and the narrative is one of structural supply constraints intersecting with surging AI-related demand and strong analyst conviction. These elements have shifted Micron's recent price dips from warning signs into what some view as an attractive entry window-although time will tell how sustainable this momentum remains.
