Mitsubishi Motors has announced a recall of 108,046 vehicles in the United States following concerns about a malfunctioning liftgate. The issue, flagged by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, involves the gas spring cylinders which hold up the rear liftgate potentially rupturing, risking the unexpected fall of the liftgate.

The recall specifically targets the Outlander and Outlander hybrid SUVs produced by Mitsubishi. An unexpected drop of the liftgate could cause injuries if it falls suddenly on anyone loading or unloading the vehicle.

To address the fault, Mitsubishi will replace both the left and right liftgate gas springs at no cost to the vehicle owners. These parts play a vital role in safely holding the liftgate open, and their failure raises safety red flags.

This is not the first time automakers have faced issues with gas spring components on rear hatch doors, but the scale here is notable with over a hundred thousand vehicles affected in the US alone. Timely action by Mitsubishi is key to mitigating injury risk, though such recalls can impact brand perception in a fiercely competitive SUV market.

While Mitsubishi hasn't disclosed data on incidents or injuries tied to this defect, the move comes preemptively ahead of any severe consequences. Regulatory oversight remains tight on the automotive industry, especially concerning parts that affect driver and passenger safety.

Owners of the affected vehicles will likely be notified by Mitsubishi shortly and advised to schedule service appointments for the replacement parts. The manufacturer's warranty and safety commitment means repairs will be carried out free of charge.

The Outlander lineup is a crucial segment for Mitsubishi in the US market, and this recall might strain the company's operational logistics as they work to fix the issue across numerous dealerships. It remains to be seen if this development influences the company's sales momentum moving forward.

Checking VINs on official channels can help identify if a vehicle is part of this recall. As automakers grapple with increasing complexity in vehicle design, issues like this underline the ongoing importance of rigorous quality control standards.
