Shares of NIO Inc (HKEX: 9866) surged over 10% on Friday, following the official debut of the Onvo L90 SUV, marking a notable lift after a jittery few weeks for the Chinese EV maker.

The Onvo L90, the company's first vehicle under its new mass-market Onvo banner, starts at 265,800 yuan (roughly $36,700). One standout feature is the battery rental option that aims to reduce upfront costs - a tactic that may appeal amid stiff competition in the crowded Chinese electric SUV market.

This six-seater electric SUV boasts a 900-volt architecture and a claimed range of up to 605 kilometers. NIO announced deliveries would kick off immediately for select versions, giving it a quick start out of the gate.

NIO's stock had been experiencing turmoil since first teasing the L90 in July, as traders mulled over how it stacks up against rivals and how pricing wars might shape margins. That volatility gave way to a more optimistic sentiment with this official rollout.

The L90 enters direct competition with Li Auto (HKEX: 2015) and its freshly launched i8 SUV. Li Auto's i8, which hit the market this week, carries a heftier price tag starting at 321,800 yuan. That premium sticker seemed to weigh on Li Auto shares, which tumbled sharply amid investor concerns.

Adding heat to the battle on pricing, China's authorities recently floated changes to national pricing laws, targeting below-cost selling and algorithm-driven pricing tactics. The goal appears to be reigning in aggressive pricing strategies that have bubbled up amid the EV boom - a factor that could reshape competitive dynamics across the board.

For NIO, the positive jump in shares reflects more than just product hype; it's a sign the market is giving some breathing room after weeks of doubt. Whether the Onvo L90 will carve out a substantial slice of the mid-size electric SUV pie remains to be seen, especially as rivals jockey for position.
