Chinese companies are lining up to grab Nvidia's NASDAQ:NVDA H20 AI chips, as sales appear set to kick back into gear soon. This comes after Nvidia revealed plans to resume shipments to the mainland, just days following CEO Jensen Huang's meeting with President Donald Trump.

Since late 2023, U.S. export restrictions have kept Nvidia's top-tier AI chips out of China, slashing potential sales by around $15 billion and forcing the tech giant to write down $5.5 billion in inventory. Now, Nvidia says it's filed for new export licenses that would allow the H20 GPU to flow back into Chinese hands, with regulatory approval seemingly close at hand.

According to sources, big Chinese players like Tencent and ByteDance have already started the paperwork to secure these chips, while Nvidia is working with the U.S. government on an approved buyer list. The U.S. Commerce Department is reportedly moving AMD's own license applications for its MI308 chips forward too, another sign that the chip export freeze might be thawing.

Shares of NVDA and AMD spiked roughly 5% in early trading on the news, a fresh jolt for two companies that have both claimed billions in revenue losses this year due to these trade restrictions.

That said, Nvidia isn't just aiming to resume sales-it also rolled out a new AI chip designed specifically for China called the RTX Pro GPU. This model is poised to comply fully with U.S. export rules and targets sectors like smart factories and logistics, potentially blending regulatory safety with market demand.

Huang seems to be doubling down on China's significance, calling it a "massive, dynamic, and highly innovative" market, with a deep pool of AI researchers. His visit to Beijing, to speak at a supply chain expo, underscores just how valuable China is to one of the world's highest-valued tech firms.

Still, the tension isn't completely gone. Washington remains wary about the possibility that AI chips could be used by the Chinese military. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators recently asked Huang to steer clear of meetings with companies linked to military or intelligence sectors, adding a political edge to this unfolding business story.

In short, this isn't just a sales story; it's a snapshot of the ongoing tug-of-war between two global powers, with Nvidia caught right in the middle. The H20's return could add between $15 billion and $20 billion to Nvidia's revenue this year, if approvals come quickly and shipments ramp up as hoped. Could this be the turning point for chip diplomacy in AI, or just a brief breather before the next round?
