The energy division of Panasonic (OTC: PCRFF) is set to ramp up its operations by entering the mass production phase for high-capacity electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This announcement comes as part of Panasonic's strategic efforts to cater to the growing demand from automakers for more efficient battery solutions. The company's newly upgraded facility located in Wakayama, Japan, will act as the primary production hub for these advanced 4680 cells, which are touted to deliver five times the energy capacity of the existing 2170 cylindrical batteries.

The 4680 cells are designed with a diameter of 46mm and a height of 80mm, making them a game-changer in the EV battery landscape. By utilizing fewer cells while increasing the overall battery pack capacity, automakers will potentially be able to enhance the driving range of their electric vehicles significantly. According to a spokesperson from Panasonic, the firm has already provided samples of these innovative batteries to select automobile manufacturers, indicating a readiness to commence production following client approvals.

Panasonic’s CEO, Kazuo Tadanobu, expressed optimism about the company’s future within the EV sector, stating that the global market for electric vehicles is expected to grow steadily in the coming years. At the recent ceremony marking the completion of the production preparations, he revealed that the initial output at the Wakayama plant will scale to several gigawatt hours annually. Moreover, the facility is projected to expand its workforce to approximately 400 employees dedicated to the development and production of these cutting-edge batteries by March 2025.

This Wakayama plant won’t just be a center of production but also a testing ground for processes that could later be replicated at other Panasonic battery manufacturing sites globally. It’s worth noting that Panasonic is no stranger to the battery production scene; it is already producing cylindrical batteries of sizes 2170 and 1860 at its Suminoe and Kaizuka plants.

In a related development, Panasonic's collaboration with Subaru (OTC: FUJHF) is also gaining traction. The two companies have announced plans to establish a new automotive battery plant in Gunma Prefecture, which is expected to be operational by the 2028 fiscal year, further underscoring their commitment to the rising demand in the electric vehicle market.
