SoftBank Group Corp. (9984) extended its winning streak, with shares hitting an all-time high, fueled by excitement around its involvement in artificial intelligence and strong backing from its majority stake in chip designer Arm Holdings (ARM). The Tokyo-based conglomerate's shares jumped nearly 13%, marking the best session on the Nikkei 225.

Investors have been rallying behind SoftBank for four sessions straight, mainly thanks to optimism that stems from Arm's pivotal position in semiconductor innovation, crucial for AI applications. The connection to Arm, in which SoftBank holds approximately 90%, remains a critical factor in driving the share price upwards.

Analysts at SMBC Nikko upgraded their price target for SoftBank to 8,500 yen, up from 5,200 yen, citing the company's improving prospects through Arm. This upward revision signals steadily growing confidence in SoftBank's exposure to the AI chipmaking surge.

SoftBank's recent momentum comes on the heels of impressive earnings reported by chip giant NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA). NVIDIA's solid results underscored robust AI-driven chip demand, bolstering the outlook for firms like Arm and reinforcing investor interest in related tech plays.

Aside from Arm, SoftBank's substantial investment in AI startup OpenAI adds another layer to the company's AI narrative. A boost in OpenAI's valuation helped SoftBank post a standout March quarter profit. Nevertheless, some skepticism remains due to the substantial debt SoftBank has taken on in relation to OpenAI.

Despite those concerns, the market seemed to shrug off the worries, treating SoftBank's AI ventures as a net positive. CEO Masayoshi Son's commitment to aggressive investments in AI is well-noted, with the OpenAI stake, valued at nearly $80 billion, central to that strategy.

The share price surge has thrown SoftBank into uncharted territory, reflecting a broader investor appetite for AI exposure among conglomerates with deep tech integration. The blend of hardware innovation through Arm and software/artificial intelligence leadership via OpenAI crafts a compelling mix.

Market participants will watch how this dual focus on AI and semiconductors continues to influence SoftBank's trajectory. For now, the stock's record-breaking run emphasizes the buzz surrounding artificial intelligence and chipmaking's role in shaping future technology leaders.
