Elon Musk revealed on his social media platform that SpaceX is prioritizing the creation of a "self-growing city" on the Moon, with hopes to accomplish this feat in under ten years. This represents a notable shift from Musk's longstanding vision of colonizing Mars first.

Though SpaceX still eyes establishing a Martian city within five to seven years, Musk emphasized that securing humanity's future on the Moon can be achieved faster. This pivot is aligned with recent investor communications indicating a focus on a crewed lunar landing targeted for March 2027.

It's a marked change from earlier statements. As recently as January 2025, Musk dismissed the Moon as a distraction, insisting, "No, we're going straight to Mars." Now, the moon beats Mars to the front burner for SpaceX.

This lunar ambition comes amid fierce U.S.-China competition to send astronauts back to the lunar surface for the first time since Apollo 17 in 1972. SpaceX holds a crucial $4 billion contract with NASA's Artemis program to land astronauts on the Moon using its Starship vehicle.

While NASA contracts form a small portion of revenue-Musk notes less than 5% this year-SpaceX's commercial Starlink internet constellation drives the bulk of its income. The company recently aired its first Super Bowl ad promoting Starlink, underscoring its commercial push.

Musk also fused his holdings by bringing his AI startup xAI under SpaceX's umbrella, a move valued at nearly $250 billion. This acquisition hints at a future where SpaceX leverages space-based AI data centers, potentially capitalizing on the rising energy demands of AI computing.

In parallel, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) charts its course toward autonomous driving and robotics, reallocating resources from traditional car production to robot manufacturing-an ambitious pivot spearheaded by Musk.

Whether SpaceX's lunar city goal is achievable in the proposed timeline remains a question. Musk's track record for optimistic deadlines is well known, but the strategic move brings fresh dynamics to the race in space exploration and commercialization.
