Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), the electric vehicle giant, has received tentative approval from Beijing to launch its advanced Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in China, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. This significant development took place during CEO Elon Musk's unexpected visit to Tesla’s largest market outside the United States.

In a strategic move to align with local regulations and preferences, Tesla has partnered with Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU), leveraging the Chinese tech giant’s robust mapping and navigation technologies. This collaboration not only furnishes Tesla with the necessary technological infrastructure but also addresses critical data security concerns that are paramount in China. The integration of Baidu's capabilities is expected to facilitate a smoother rollout of Tesla’s FSD system in this highly regulated market.

The announcement led to a notable surge in Tesla’s stock, which jumped over 6% in premarket trading following the news. Similarly, shares of Baidu also experienced a significant uplift, increasing by 5%. This market response underscores the economic impact and investor confidence in Tesla’s growth prospects within China.

Elon Musk’s trip also included high-level meetings with key stakeholders in the Chinese government and industry. He met with Premier Li Qiang, additionally, Musk’s discussions with Robin Zeng, chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology—a leading supplier of batteries to Tesla—further solidified strategic partnerships essential for Tesla’s operations and expansion in China.

This approval from Beijing not only signifies a major step forward for Tesla’s business in China but also highlights the evolving landscape of global automotive technology, particularly in the realm of autonomous driving.
