Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack on Moscow, Killing Four

Early Sunday, Moscow experienced its most substantial drone assault in over a year, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals, including three in the capital's surrounding region. The attack, attributed to Ukrainian forces, marks a significant escalation in Kyiv's campaign to strike deep within Russia.

The Belgorod region, located near the northeastern border with Ukraine, reported a fatality as well, with local officials confirming the toll. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed it had intercepted more than 1,000 Ukrainian drones over a 24-hour period, underscoring the scale of the offensive.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy openly acknowledged the strikes, posting footage showing drones in flight alongside plumes of smoke and emergency crews battling fires. Zelenskiy framed the attacks as justified responses to Russia's ongoing aggression, highlighting Ukraine's ability to hit targets over 500 kilometers from the border despite dense Russian air defenses around Moscow.

In his nightly address, Zelenskiy hinted at a shift in momentum, stating that Ukrainian military operations have intensified to the point where their activity now outpaces Russian efforts along the front lines. Details were sparse, but the implication suggests a notable change in the dynamics of the conflict.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported damage to a high-precision weapons manufacturing facility near Moscow, as well as a strike against a drone command post in the Russian-occupied Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. These strategic hits align with Kyiv's recent focus on degrading Russian military infrastructure deep inside Russian territory.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that 81 drones bound for the city were intercepted overnight, with 12 people wounded and some property damage near a major oil refinery. However, the refinery itself reportedly sustained no substantial damage. Local authorities also reported deaths in Khimki and the Mytishchi district, areas north of Moscow.

The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes, accusing Kyiv of targeting civilians and labeling the attacks as terrorism timed with the ongoing Eurovision contest. Both sides deny deliberately aiming at civilian targets amid the intensified aerial exchanges.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has ratcheted up drone operations targeting fuel depots, pipelines, and other key infrastructure, aiming to disrupt Russia's military logistics. This latest push reflects a strategic attempt to pressure Moscow by bringing the war directly into its backyard, challenging Russia's claims of secure airspace over its capital.
