Japan’s new foreign minister has reaffirmed his country’s support in upholding the 2016 arbitral ruling that favored the Philippines in its maritime dispute with China in the South China Sea. West Philippine Sea (FILE PHOTO FROM AFP) The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said this was conveyed by Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa during a phone call with DFA Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Dec. 8. According to the DFA, “Minister Hayashi expressed his strong opposition to unilateral attempts to change by force the status quo in the East and South China Seas.” Locsin said that the Philippines values Japan’s statements of support for the Arbitral Award and for an international law-based order in the South China Sea. HE further said that Japan’s “formal demonstrations of support send a message of respect for outcomes of diplomatic and legal processes, as well as strengthen the legal order over the seas.” The Philippine top diplomat also echoed President Duterte’s statement at the 13th ASEM Summit Retreat that “there can be no other acceptable basis for a just maritime order but the law, particularly the 1982 UNCLOS.” “All countries – big and small – must adhere to the rule of law faithfully and consistently.

Kenya: Vaccine Requirements Violate Rights

The proposed measures, announced less than a month ago, will go into effect on December 21, 2021. Given that approximately 10 percent of adults in Kenya had been vaccinated by the end of November, based on Health Ministry figures, the requirement risks violating the rights to work, health, education, and social security for millions of Kenyans. While the government has an obligation to protect its people from serious public health threats, the measures must be reasonable and proportional, said Adi Radhakrishnan, Africa research fellow at Human Rights Watch. Vaccination coverage hinges on availability and accessibility, and the governments new measures could leave millions of Kenyans unable to get essential government services. On November 21 Kenyas cabinet secretary for health, Mutahi Kagwe, announced that beginning December 21, authorities will require anyone seeking government services to provide proof of full Covid-19 vaccination.

BEGINNING today, Jamaica will offer a booster shot to all those 18 years and older who have received a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The booster can be given with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine two to six months after the administration of the primary vaccination, or with the Pfizer vaccine six months after the primary vaccination, the Ministry of Health reported. Also starting today, adults 60 years and older and health-care workers will be given a booster dose of the other COVID-19 vaccines. This development comes in the wake of the ministry''s finalisation of its evaluation and benefit analysis of administering an additional dose of the authorised COVID-19 vaccines to key members of the population. The ministry recommends that a booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine be offered six months or more after the completion of the initial doses that may have consisted of either mRNA (Pfizer) or viral vector vaccine (AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson). The move is in line with a Cabinet decision for boosters to be given to key populations at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, increased risk of waning and/or lower protection, and who could pose increased risk of transmission to vulnerable populations.

Pfizer, AZ jabs induce lower antibodies vs Omicron

10:06am, Monday, 13'th Dec 2021 Breaking the News 24/7
Two dose COVID-19 vaccines developed by Pfizer/BioNTech and AstraZeneca induce a lower amount of antibodies against the Omicron coronavirus strain compared to previous variants, according to an Oxford
"Because of the new version of Omicron, a third dose of RNA vaccine must be given because it really protects. The first two doses of AstraZeneca protect only 20%. However, if a booster dose is given to two previous Pfizer ones, the protection against Omicron is equalized to the one against the Delta variant - 85% it is certain that you will not get sick or if it happens, it will be easier to deal with". This was explained by Prof. Todor Kantardjiev, vaccination consultant of the Sofia Municipality, on the air of Nova TV. He stressed that Omicron is more contagious, but it is milder. Vaccines are slightly weaker against it, and those who have already suffered from COVID-19 can become infected again. The professor predicts that the death rate may rise due to unprovided medical care. According to him, the new cases of coronavirus in our country are decreasing quite slowly, because 10 patients infect 9 people. " We cannot expect a sharp decline in cases. There are many people in intensive care units and there are many dead ," he said.
