DoH calls for sobriety amid Omicron threat
04:33pm, Saturday, 04'th Dec 2021 The Manila Times
THE Department of Health (DoH) on Saturday appealed for sobriety amid the threat of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, saying it is too early to determine how the new strain could affect the country due to lack of data on its transmissibility and virulence. "Mahirap po tayong magbigay ng ganitong babala na natatakot ang tao dahil wala pa naman tayong ebidensya. Hinihintay po natin ang ipalalabas ng mga experto across the globe pati na rin ang WHO (World Health Organization) (We can''t give this kind of warning that could cause undue public alarm because we do not have evidence yet. We are waiting for the experts across the globe and the WHO to release information about this variant)," Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said during the Laging Handa briefing on Saturday, responding to OCTA Research''s statement that another surge is imminent in January if the Omicron variant entered the country. Philippine Genome Center Executive Director Cynthia Saloma explained that the Omicron variant has an attribute called the S-gene dropout, making it easier to detect using a test kit called TaqPath.
Negros to return expired vaccines
04:05pm, Saturday, 04'th Dec 2021 The Manila Times
BACOLOD CITY: The provincial government of Negros Occidental will return 1,492 vials or 14,920 doses of expired AstraZeneca vaccines to the Department of Health (DoH). Dr. Claudelia Pabillo, in charge of the provincial cold storage facility, said the expired vaccine doses were part of 4,530 vials or 45,300 doses delivered in the province on November 8. She said they were unable to distribute the vaccines because city and municipal health offices in the province were hesitant to accept the vials after they learned that the expiration of the vaccine was near. "We value vaccines and we really wanted to use them, but we value the vaccine recipients more. The potency of the vaccine decreases as the period of expiration nears. So, we don''t roll it out because it may not meet up the expected potency of the vaccines. Both are important, but we value more the safety of the vaccines," provincial administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz said. Pabillo also said that the expired vaccines are still in a cold storage facility and will be returned to the DoH for disposal.
This vaccine is safe for booster doses
01:20pm, Saturday, 04'th Dec 2021 News Track Live (English)
New Delhi: The Government of India has been on alert after two cases of new variant omicron of corona infection were received in Bengaluru. Guidelines have also been issued by the Ministry of Health ranging from this variant. Scientists and doctors around the world are busy brainstorming on how dangerous this variant is compared to the rest of the corona variant and how effective the vaccine is against it. There is also talk of whether it is time to give a booster dose. Meanwhile, the laboratory INSACOG, which tests genome sequencing in the country, has spoken big about booster doses. INSACOG says that in view of the crisis of omicron variants, the time has come to consider giving boosters to people aged 40 or above. It is our endeavour that all people get both doses of the corona vaccine at the earliest. It is not yet clear how effective the existing vaccines are in overcoming Omicron, making it necessary to take a decision on the booster. A preliminary investigation has revealed that omicron may again increase the infection risk.
