Over 6,400 activists arrested at anti-war demonstrations in Russia

12:31pm, Tuesday, 01'st Mar 2022 National Daily Nigeria
Over 6,400 activists arrested at anti-war demonstrations in Russia. Civil rights site OVD-Info reported on Tuesday that over 6,400 people had been arrested in Russia, since the protests against the war in Ukraine started on Feb. 24. About half of the arrests, 3,126, were made during protests in Moscow, while 2,084 were in St Petersburg, OVD-Info said. The invasion of Ukraine was driving many in Russia to protest, and Russian security forces had responded brutally to demonstrators. Russian authorities urged people not to take part in the unauthorised rallies. They had also repeatedly banned rallies, citing the pandemic. In Brussels, EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell praised demonstrators in Belarus who were calling for a more democratic approach at home under long-time leader Alexander Lukashenko while protesting the war in Ukraine. Borrell in a video posted on Twitter and subtitled in in three languages, Belarusian, Russian and English appreciated the people for their efforts in support of Ukraine. “To the Belarusian people: many of you took huge personal risks struggling for a free and democratic Belarus. “Now you are raising your voice against Russia’s war on Ukraine and [President] Lukashenka’s decision to support it.

In Rio, even a ban can''t keep revelers from Carnival streets

07:51pm, Saturday, 26'th Feb 2022 New Haven Register
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The pandemic may have disrupted Carnival plans in Rio de Janeiro for a second straight year, but revelers who have flocked to the Brazilian city for sun, sea and samba still found ways to party on Saturday. Thousands defied an official ban on street parties by dancing, singing and mingling to the rhythm of Samba, sometimes as police looked on. Others attended more formal events that moved indoors this year after City Hall banned “blocos,” the tightly packed street parties traditionally thronged by those who cannot or do not want to lay out for pricey tickets for the official parade at the Sambadrome — which this year has been postponed to April because Brazil is still not past the omicron wave. “I think it’s a shame this has to happen this way,” said Tulio Brasil, a 29 year-old music marketing director who found one of the unauthorized street parties in the city center. “It doesn’t make sense to crowd everyone into a closed place when the street, an open space, much more airy, is prohibited," he said.

The cruise line just unveiled a new ship meant to take competitors to shame.
The new season kicks off this weekend. Our panel of writers deliver their verdicts on the MVP, champions and the young players to watch Douglas Costa. “I’ll bring the flash that LA expects,” the 31-year-old winger declares in a curiously dark and menacing video announcing his transfer to the Galaxy. Carnival has never looked so sinister. Unlike that studio, MLS stadiums should be lit when one of the world’s best dribblers graces the field. A serial winner with Shakhtar Donetsk, Bayern Munich and Juventus, Costa has 31 Brazil caps and ought to supply Javier Hernández with plenty of chances. TD Continue reading…
