A look on Russia-imposed sanctions following Ukraine offensive
03:30pm, Friday, 04'th Mar 2022 Hespress English
From sanctions on media broadcasts, sports, business to technology, several nations demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine, in response to the Russian offensive that began February 24. Nearly 368,000 refugees have fled fighting in Ukraine for neighboring countries, including Poland, Romania, and the number “continues to rise,” according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)’s recent data. Media YouTube banned the broadcasts on March 1 of Russian state-controlled media RT and Sputnik across Europe, according to German Press Agency DPA. This move came after RT and Sputnik faced frequent criticism in Western Europe for serving as Kremlin propaganda outlets. “Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, we are blocking YouTube channels linked to RT and Sputnik in Europe with immediate effect,” Youtube’s spokesperson said, according to the same source. Sports The International Federation of Football Association ( FIFA ) announced on February 27 several measures against Russia, including the ban of the Russian flag and anthem for the upcoming sporting events, mainly the 2022 FIFA Qatar World Cup.

These Are All The Companies That Have Cut Ties With Russia
04:20am, Friday, 04'th Mar 2022 Zero Hedge
These Are All The Companies That Have Cut Ties With Russia An ever-expanding list of public companies, including Apple, Exxon, GM, and Nike, are proudly announcing they are cutting ties to Russia as its invasion of Ukraine brings condemnation and sanctions. But while all this sounds very ''politically-correct'' and ''shared-sacrifice''-y, Bloomberg reports that if every U.S. tech firm followed Apple and disconnected from Russia, it would reduce revenue by only 1%-2% in a worst-case scenario , according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. So far, the lost business looks like it won’t have a major impact on profits (or stock prices), especially with China being by far Russia''s largest trading partner. You will find more infographics at Statista In fact, for some, like Exxon, cutting ties with Russia can spark a ''virtue-signaling'' ESG boost with minimal impact to the company''s actual business , and as Bloomberg''s Tim Culpan remarks in a very frank opinion piece, consumer brands halting sales in Russia "smells of opportunism" to some, with transportation constrained, limited access to international payments systems, and a sinking ruble: "While that sounds like an appropriate response to Moscow’s brutality, it also smells of opportunism… ...it’s hard not to wonder whether companies were taking a principled stand only once it was no longer feasible to do business in the country " Of course soaring oil and other commodities cost will strike at profits as expenses rise and consumers have less to spend.

A Round Up: International Reactions to the Ongoing War
04:31pm, Thursday, 03'rd Mar 2022 Georgia Today
Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the Russian people the day before Russia invaded Ukraine last week, asking them to stop their leadership from sending troops across the border and into his country, in an emotional video appeal that underscored the close ties between the two nations. Zelensky said Moscow had approved the movement of nearly 200,000 troops into Ukrainian territory, along with thousands of armored vehicles. He said an incursion risked becoming “the start of a big war on the European continent.” “You are being told this is a plan to free the people of Ukraine,” Zelensky said. “But the Ukrainian people are free.” “The Ukraine on your news and Ukraine in real life are two completely different countries, and the main difference is that ours is real,” Zelensky said. “You are told that we are Nazis. How could a people that lost more than 8 million people in the fight against Nazism support Nazism? “How could I be a Nazi?” Zelensky, who is Jewish, asked, noting that his grandfather spent the entire war as a Soviet soldier but died in an independent Ukraine.

02:27pm, Thursday, 03'rd Mar 2022 AOL
By Anna Ringstrom, Tassilo Hummel and Gwladys Fouche (Reuters) - French bank Societe Generale said it was working to cut its risks in Russia, fearing a tit-for-tat response by Moscow to Western sanctions, as more companies from vodka maker Diageo to IKEA suspended business in the country. Brazilian plane-maker Embraer joined Airbus and Boeing in halting parts supplies to Russian airlines, while Lufthansa said it was considering rerouting cargo flights to Asia via Alaska to avoid Russian airspace. "The war has both a huge human impact and is resulting in serious disruptions to supply chain and trading conditions, which is why the company groups have decided to temporarily pause IKEA operations in Russia," IKEA said in a statement. Broadening the spread of corporate responses, IKEA is also one of the first companies to halt business with Belarus, an ally of Russia that has played a supporting role in its invasion of Ukraine. Spirits company Diageo, the maker of Smirnoff vodka and Guinness, said on Thursday said it had paused exports to Ukraine and Russia.

Global business abandons Russia after Ukraine invasion
10:21am, Thursday, 03'rd Mar 2022 Axios
Giant global businesses in every sector are abandoning Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Why it matters: In addition to condemning the invasion, the companies see an impossible environment — from worker safety … to the logistics of getting supplies ... financial and sales disruption ... and the complexity of complying with sanctions. State of play: Financial sanctions have isolated Russia from the rest of the world . Businesses operating in Russia have an increasingly limited ability to collect revenue or pay workers and suppliers. Economic sanctions, including export controls, have curtailed imports . Some workers are being moved out of Russia. Restricted airspace and travel are preventing companies from getting equipment they need to continue to operate. Between the lines: Some companies that have very little physical presence in Russia — including many in tech , retail and media — are limiting how products are used in Russia, or have pulled them. Flashback: Since the Soviet Union''s collapse three decades ago, Russia had been seen as an emerging market with long-term growth potential.
