Starlink ‘will not’ block Russian news sources: Musk

12:14am, Sunday, 06'th Mar 2022 Business Recorder
WASHINGTON: SpaceX chief Elon Musk said Saturday the company’s Starlink satellite broadband service will not block Russian media outlets “unless at gunpoint.” “Starlink has been told by some governments (not Ukraine) to block Russian news sources. We will not do so unless at gunpoint,” the tech titan tweeted. “Sorry to be a free speech absolutist.” Russian-controlled media outlets have come under fire as the West and its allies seek to crack down on misinformation about Moscow’s onslaught on Ukraine. This week the European Union banned Russian state-funded RT and Sputnik from the 27-nation bloc, while US-based social media giants including Twitter and Facebook parent Meta have taken steps to block the spread of Russian state-linked news media. Starlink was activated in Ukraine last week after Kyiv digital minister Mykhailo Fedorov urged Musk to provide the embattled country with stations days after it was invaded by neighboring Russia. The service operates a constellation of more than 2,000 satellites that aim to provide internet access across the planet.
Vladimir Putin is surging forward with his illegal war against the sovereign nation of Ukraine, and now the Russian Federation President is expanding his war to include his own citizens. Putin may not be shelling Moscow or Saint Petersburg but he is imposing fascist and draconian policies on Russians. As of Saturday, anyone who publicly calls Putin’s war on Ukraine a “war” can be jailed for up to 15 years, The New York Times reports. The new law, passed by the Russian Parliament Friday, applies to not only news articles and broadcast news but even social media. President Putin is assisting citizens tempted to not use the Kremlin’s mandatory phrasing, “special military operation” when referring to his war of choice against Ukraine on social media by banning Facebook, a social media platform with an estimated reach of 61 million people in Russia. “Announcements that the law was coming had already pushed Russian independent media outlets to shut down in recent days , and more followed on Friday,” The Times notes.

Putin: Any countries imposing no-fly zone party to conflict

05:57pm, Saturday, 05'th Mar 2022 Kuwait Times
KYIV: A strategic Ukrainian city put off a planned evacuation of residents yesterday blaming Russian forces for breaking their temporary ceasefire as the Russian leader warned the West of a wider war if a no-fly zone is set up. “Any movement in this direction will be considered by us as participation in an armed conflict by that country,” President Vladimir Putin said. With his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky criticizing NATO for ruling out a no-fly zone for fear of sparking nuclear conflict, Putin spoke of “colossal and catastrophic consequences not only for Europe but also the whole world”, if such a zone was set up. For Zelensky, on day 10 of the invasion, under an escalating bombardment that has flattened more and more infrastructure and sent nearly 1.4 million civilians fleeing for their lives, the Western military alliance’s “no” to a no-fly zone had essentially given “the green light for further bombing of Ukrainian cities and villages”. Under siege Mariupol proudly resisted Moscow-backed rebels during a 2014 conflict, but the Azoz sea port has for days been without electricity, food and water in the dead of winter and people began gathering for the evacuation.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said some governments recently told the company to block Russian media outlets from its Starlink satellite broadband service. In a tweet he sent out early Saturday, Musk declared the company would not comply with the request "unless at gunpoint." According to Musk, the demand hadn''t come from Ukraine. "Sorry to be a free speech absolutist," he added. Starlink has been told by some governments (not Ukraine) to block Russian news sources. We will not do so unless at gunpoint. Sorry to be a free speech absolutist. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 5, 2022 Musk also said SpaceX would temporarily shift its priorities to focus on cybersecurity and overcoming signal jamming, a decision he noted would cause "slight delays" in the rollout of its Starship reusable rocket and Starlink V2 satellites. SpaceX''s position puts it at odds with a growing list of companies that have blocked access to Russian state media across Europe in the wake of the country''s invasion of Ukraine. On February 27th, the European Union said it would ban Russian state-backed media outlets Russia Today and Sputnik for their role in spreading misinformation and "lies to justify Putin''s war.

This article was originally published on SmartContent and appears here with permission. Cryptocurrencies and tokens are a completely new digital asset class never before seen in financial systems. It’s why one of the first and most commonly asked questions about crypto-assets is what is their purpose and why are they valuable? Answering these fundamental questions requires a thorough examination of three separate dynamics: Identifying what purpose cryptocurrencies/tokens serve within underlying blockchain networks Understanding why cryptocurrencies/tokens are preferred over traditional monetary instruments Determining how cryptocurrencies/tokens accrue value We aim to answer these questions, as well as provide examples of how some of the most popular cryptocurrencies/tokens currently function today. Defining Cryptocurrencies and Tokens Before diving deeper, it’s important to define the terms cryptocurrency, token, and crypto-asset. Generally, cryptocurrencies are defined as digital assets whose main purpose is to serve as a medium of exchange (MoE) and/or a store of value (SoV).

Russia Bans Facebook Amid War With Ukraine

12:06pm, Saturday, 05'th Mar 2022 The Trent
Russia’s communications regulator says it blocked Meta Platforms Inc’s Facebook in response to what it said were restrictions of access to Russian media on its platform, more than a week after Moscow invaded its neighbour Ukraine. The regulator, Roskomnadzor, said on Friday, March 4, 2022, there had been 26 cases of discrimination against Russian media by Facebook since October 2020, with access restricted to state-backed channels like RT and the RIA news agency. The company this week said it had restricted access to RT and Sputnik across the European Union and was globally demoting content from Russian state-controlled outlets’ Facebook pages and Instagram accounts, as well as posts containing links to those outlets on Facebook. Last week, Moscow said it was partially limiting access to Facebook, a move the company said came after it refused a government request to stop the independent fact-checking of several Russian state media outlets. Meanwhile, Tass news agency reported on Friday that Russia had restricted access to Twitter.
Russia’s media regulator announced that it was blocking access to the Facebook network in the country, claiming parent company Meta’s restrictions on Kremlin-affiliated media accounts violated a Russian law banning censorship. In the wake of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Meta previously said it was “globally demoting” content from Facebook pages and Instagram accounts from Russian […]

Is Meta Platforms a Value Stock in the Face of AI Headwinds?

The Facebook parent company faces significant privacy-related challenges here and abroad.
International news outlets on Friday announced that they will stop broadcasting from Russia after the country’s parliament approved a new censorship law that could punish anyone said to be spreading “fake” news with up to 15 years behind bars. Perhaps because progress has been slow-going for Russia, increasingly ostracized nation is also stepping up a corresponding information battle that’s accompanied its assault on Ukraine. Tech platforms have cracked down on Russian news and state propaganda; Russia, in turn, has responded by banning Facebook and Twitter inside the country. After blocking access in-country to foreign news websites like The BBC, Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Deutsche Welle for reporting information that displeased the Kremlin,d the Russian parliament passed a strict new law which does the following: Anyone spreading what the government decides is “fake” news about the country’s military faces a jail term of up to 15 years. A sliding scale of punishment is also included in the new legislation, including fines, for anyone found to have discredited the Russian military or spoken out in favor of sanctions against the country.
