TikTok has joined Facebook in blocking access to two Russian state media outlets in the European Union. Sputnik and RT are no longer able to post to audiences within the EU, and their pages and content will no longer be accessible to users in the bloc, a TikTok spokesperson confirmed. TikTok’s move comes as Facebook , Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft have also cracked down on the outlets, which have large followings on social media platforms. Facebook also said Monday that it was blocking access to the publications, and Twitter said it would label all tweets from Russian state media accounts.Those actions come after a broader order from EU officials to ban RT and Sputnik.

Nick Clegg said in a Twitter post that the social media company received requests from a number of governments and the EU to take steps in relation to Russian state-controlled media on its platforms. Canadian telecoms operators have also stopped offering the RT channel . Russian state-run media’s activity on social media platforms has emerged as a contentious issue for big tech companies during the country’s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a “special operation.” Meta, Microsoft, and Alphabet’s Google and YouTube have taken measures in recent days to restrict Russian state media from making money from ads on their platforms.

A spokesperson for TikTok told NPR it was also blocking the two outlets in the EU. The moves mean people using the social media apps in EU countries won''t be able to access pages or content posted by RT and Sputnik. Microsoft on Monday said it would drop RT''s news apps from its smartphone app store, not display any RT or Sputnik content on its Microsoft Start news feed and MSN.com, and push the sites down in Bing search results. On Sunday, EU President Ursula von der Leyen announced a ban on the two outlets, which she described as "the Kremlin''s media machine." "The state-owned Russia Today and Sputnik, and their subsidiaries, will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin''s war," she tweeted .
