EU to ban Russian state-backed media outlets RT and Sputnik
11:00pm, Sunday, 27'th Feb 2022 Engadget
In a decision that could have a significant impact on how companies like YouTube moderate their platforms, the European Union announced it plans to ban Russian state media organizations. On Sunday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia Today (RT), Sputnik and their respective subsidiaries would “no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin’s war.” The EU’s executive branch also plans to develop new tools to combat disinformation spread by those organizations. However, von der Leyen didn’t specify what those measures may involve. Second, we will ban the Kremlin’s media machine in the EU. The state-owned Russia Today and Sputnik, and their subsidiaries, will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin’s war. We are developing tools to ban their toxic and harmful disinformation in Europe. pic.twitter.com/7RcPEn6E14 — Ursula von der Leyen (@vonderleyen) February 27, 2022 At the same time, it’s unclear exactly how the EU will go about banning those organizations.

Meta restricts Russian state media access to Facebook in Ukraine
09:42pm, Sunday, 27'th Feb 2022 Engadget
At the behest of the country''s government, Meta took its most significant action yet against Russian state media organizations amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. On Sunday, Nick Clegg, the company’s recently promoted president of global affairs, said Meta was restricting some Russian accounts within the war-torn nation. We have been in contact with the Government of Ukraine, and at their request we have also restricted access to several accounts in Ukraine, including those belonging to some Russian state media organizations. — Nick Clegg (@nickclegg) February 27, 2022 “We have been in contact with the government of Ukraine, and at their request we have also restricted access to several accounts in Ukraine, including those belonging to some Russian state media organizations,” said Clegg. We’ve reached out to Meta to ask the company to clarify how it’s restricting those accounts. Clegg noted Ukraine also asked Meta to limit Russia’s access to Facebook and Instagram. For the time being, the company denied that request, claiming people in the country have used its platforms to organize anti-war protests and access independent information. “We believe turning off our services would silence important expression at a crucial time,” he said. ⚠️ Confirmed: Facebook content servers are now restricted on #Russia ''s leading internet providers; the incident comes shortly after the restriction of Twitter as Russia clashes with social media companies over the invasion of Ukraine Report: https://t.co/PzFZ662LyN pic.twitter.com/cOWMs731sO — NetBlocks (@netblocks) February 27, 2022 This most recent move comes after Meta blocked Russian state media outlets from accessing its advertising platform or using other monetization features.

What Does Mark Zuckerberg Think About The Meaning Of Life — And Death?
07:00pm, Sunday, 27'th Feb 2022 Benzinga
Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: FB ) co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has spent most of his life creating things to facilitate human connection. He continues to push the limits of interaction as Meta shifts its focus to an alternate reality in the Metaverse. So what does the man who''s making new worlds think about the purpose of living in this one? When it comes to life, the answer is pretty clear, but when it comes to death… “Constraints are helpful,” Zuckerberg said Saturday on " Lex Fridman Podcast #267 ." That''s coming from the guy who founded what''s now the world''s largest social media platform at 19 and became the world''s youngest billionaire by the time he was 23. The Dusk: Zuckerberg is definitely aware of life''s finite quality and aims to stay safe, but he''s not freaked out by death. He believes longer lifespans are a good thing, which is why he has pledged 99% of his Meta shares to philanthropic causes, specifically toward the ability to cure, prevent or manage all diseases. "But it was an intentional decision to not focus our philanthropy on like …

Trump praises Putin, revives election lies
06:00pm, Sunday, 27'th Feb 2022 Kuwait Times
ORLANDO: Donald Trump emerged from political exile Saturday to blast President Joe Biden and NATO over the Ukraine crisis and reprise his false claims of a stolen 2020 election in a speech to grassroots Republicans. Speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida, the former president spent 86 minutes reprising many of his favorite applause lines, assailing the “radical left” and its “witch hunt” against him. As massive explosions lit up the sky over Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, Trump blamed Russia’s invasion of its neighbor on Biden’s “weakness” and lavished praise on President Vladimir Putin’s intellect. “As everyone understands, this horrific disaster would never have happened if our election was not rigged,” he said, to rapt applause. NATO, he said, was “looking the opposite of smart” for hitting Russia with sanctions rather than resolving to “blow (Russia) to pieces – at least psychologically”. “The problem is not that Putin is smart, which of course he’s smart,” he went on. “But the real problem is that our leaders are so dumb.” After a year largely out of the public eye, Trump’s ecstatic reception left little doubt that the Republican Party remains in thrall to the twice-impeached, single-term president.
Ukraine invasion dilemma for US Big Tech
05:35pm, Sunday, 27'th Feb 2022 Kuwait Times
WASHINGTON: US tech giants were under intense pressure to pick a side regarding Ukraine’s invasion, at once facing calls to stand against Moscow’s internationally condemned war but also Kremlin retribution for resistance. Services like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have a unique power because of their global reach and ubiquity, but they are profit-motivated companies so a stridently principled stand can be bad for business. Since Moscow attacked its neighbor Ukraine this week, the besieged nation has urged firms from Apple to Google and Netflix to cut off Russia, while Facebook said its service was curbed for refusing to bend to Kremlin demands. Twitter, which faced fines and slower service last year over government orders to remove certain content, reported Saturday its network was “being restricted for some people in Russia.” “Western companies have provided an online space for Russians to get information about the atrocities their government is committing in Ukraine,” tweeted Alina Polyakova, president and CEO of the Center for European Policy Analysis. “The Kremlin is moving aggressively to hide the truth,” she added.
10 Weirdest Business Names Of All Time
04:37pm, Sunday, 27'th Feb 2022 Benzinga
As Facebook (NASDAQ: FB ) reportedly prepares to rebrand itself with a new name, speculation is percolating across the Internet on what Mark Zuckerberg will choose as the future moniker for his social media empire. One might assume that Zuckerberg is being very serious and deliberate in renaming his company. After all, sometimes a company’s name can create confusion, outrage or guilty pleasure. Here are 10 company names that generate attention for all the wrong reasons. Big Dick''s Halfway Inn: Yeah, subtlety was in short supply when this Missouri-based bar, grill and gift shop was named. The establishment, located along the Lake of the Ozarks, prides itself as the “Home of the Minnow Shot,” whatever that is. Frying Nemo: Here is one eatery that you will not find at a Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS ) theme park. This English fish and chips restaurant clearly had a better ending for the 2003 animated film, with a liberal sprinkling of dark malt vinegar and a side of musky peas to create a truly scrumptious piscine meal.

Trump Praises ‘Smart’ Vladimir Putin, Criticizes ‘Dumb’ Westerners
02:27pm, Sunday, 27'th Feb 2022 Naija News
Donald Trump supporters applauded their hero on Saturday on the third day of the annual American Conservatives'' Grand Convention in Orlando, Florida, with red caps and the United States flags. At CPAC, the former president, who has not lost his aura among the participants, made an 86-minute speech in the evening, hammering his usual formulas against "the radical left" and its "witch hunt" against him. And after a year away from the public eye, the fervour with which the billionaire was received shows that the Republican Party is still dominated by the aura of the former president, who served only one term and has faced two impeachment trials. "Four more years" The slogan "Four more years!" was intoned by his supporters, who cheered wildly as he spoke out against “woke tyranny” and “cancel culture”. The 75-year-old billionaire drew the most applause when he called it "bullshit" that the Democrats are presenting themselves as the party of democracy, and when he said that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, “came to the White House and licked my ass”.
