How Gen Z is fighting back against Big Tech

01:48pm, Saturday, 27'th Nov 2021 AlterNet
As a seventh grader, Emma Lembke was one of the last in her friend group in Birmingham, Alabama, to get on social media. When she did, she says she soon found herself addicted, spending five hours a day on the apps, mostly Instagram. At an important developmental period in my life as a young female, as a young kid, in middle school, [I got] wound up in this world of likes, comments, very deeply quantifiable measures of my value, addictive algorithms, and the endless scroll, she says. When Lembke reached what she calls a breaking point in ninth grade, she began looking into the effects of social media. She found research articles, statistics , and a now widely shared TEDx Talk that all suggested to her that the anxiety, body image issues, and isolation she thought she was alone in feeling were in fact linked to social media use. During the pandemic, Lembke, who is now 19 and a freshman at Washington University, started an organization called Log Off , which provides resources for reducing screen time , advice for better digital well-being , a curriculum for schools on navigating social media, and a place to submit personal stories so teens can break what Lembke says is a stigma around admitting that use of social media is making them miserable.
Three centers of power increasingly dominate our lives, but are less and less accountable: The Supreme Court, the Federal Reserve, and Big Tech. The Supreme Court Start with the high court. These nine unelected individuals all appointed for life are about to revolutionize America in ways the majority of Americans dont want . This court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade , the 1973 reproductive rights ruling; declare a century-old New York law against carrying firearms unconstitutional; and strip federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency of the power to regulate private businesses. And much more. Let me remind you that five of the current justices were put there by presidents who lost the popular vote in their first election. Only 40 percent of the public now approves of the Supreme Courts performance, a new low. Yet because justices are appointed for life, its members are immune to checks and balances, no matter how unpopular their rulings may be. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for U.S.-based adults of all ages, anti-vaxxers continue to spread lies and misinformation about the effectiveness of vaccines. And some of those anti-vaxxers, according to Business Insiders Tom Porter , are promoting fake and dangerous ways for people who have received COVID-19 vaccines and now regret it to de-vaccinate themselves. Americans who have already been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and received the Moderna or Pfizer booster shots are getting them because they want more protection from COVID-19, not less. Anti-vaxxers, however, are making the false claim that vaccines are harmful and that their cures can counter those harmful effects. But as Porter points out, it is physically impossible to de-vaccinate someone who has already received a COVID-19 vaccine. Porter explains, It is impossible to undo vaccination, a process which works by teaching the body to fight infection itself, and which doesn''t rely on substances that can be isolated or removed.
