Anti-vaxx Chronicles: This is a story about an owner of an anti-vaxx Facebook group
09:00pm, Saturday, 20'th Nov 2021 DAILY KOS
Facebook is a menace. COVID-19 is a menace. Conservatism is a cesspool. Together, those three ingredients have created a toxic stew of malevolent death and devastation. We can talk about all those things in the abstract, look at the numbers and statistics, and catch the occasional whiff of seditionist right-wing rhetoric. But I hadnt really fully understood just how horrifying that combination of right-wing extremism, Facebook, and a killer virus was until I became a regular at the Herman Cain Awards subreddit. This series will document some of those stories, so we are aware of what the other side is doing to our country. Todays cautionary tale features the actual owner of an anti-vaxx Facebook group. The vast vast vast majority of hospitalized are unvaccinated. The vast majority of unvaccinated are Republicans. The highest current COVID caseloads are in Trump counties. Its called extrapolation. No one is asking a patient who they voted for. Their actions tell the story. Its a veritable roundtable of Fox News deplorables!

A Newsroom is born
05:00pm, Saturday, 20'th Nov 2021 Newsroom New Zealand
The Newsroom you are reading turns five-years-old next March. But Newsroom.co.nz actually turns 25 today, the day the url was registered and it began as a pioneer in internet news distribution in NZ. The founder of founders, Peter Fowler, explains. Few web sites can say they have operated continuously as a business for 25 years. Not Google. Nor Facebook. But newsroom.co.nz can. For a quarter century NewsRoom has delivered quality independent journalism under various mastheads, with the latest editors Tim Murphy and Mark Jennings rebranding and revitalising what remains one of NZs leading news services. Back in 1996, media dismissed the Internet as a fad. Like CB radio except it''s full of porn. They poo-pooed my warning it would kill newspapers. You cant read a computer on the toilet or the beach, they said. It was in 1995 while working at RNZ that overseas wire stories about the "information superhighway caught my attention. I became obsessed with this amazing new mass-communications technology with a low entry cost and high audience potential.

We all know better than to allow Facebook to control the metaverse
04:17pm, Saturday, 20'th Nov 2021 AlterNet
Bree McEwan , University of Toronto In the midst of the scandals of the Facebook papers , Facebook rebranded the company as Meta . The new name was designed to reflect a focus beyond the Facebook social network platform, and into the metaverse the extension of the internet into three-dimensional virtual reality (VR) spaces. However, given Facebook''s handling or mishandling of their current social responsibilities, we should be cautious about how much control a single company should have over the potential metaverse. We have an opportunity to be proactive regarding the construction of social worlds within virtual reality rather than the reactive state we find ourselves in regarding Meta''s current social products. As a scholar exploring social interaction within virtual reality spaces, I have concerns about Facebook''s control of the metaverse. These concerns have guided my decisions when I taught courses within VR classrooms as part of the VARC lab at DePaul University and when I established a virtual reality research program at the Institute for Communication, Culture, Information, and Technology at the University of Toronto Mississauga .
