First Bank head office By KEN EMORDI Facility to strengthen FirstBank’s commitment to gender financing with US$30 million targeted to women-owned and led businesses Partnership will enhance funding to local SMEs to boost growth and promote financial and social inclusion across Nigeria The facility adds US$100 million to CDC/BII’s contribution to the 2XChallenge First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Nigeria’s premier and leading financial inclusion services provider, has announced its partnership with CDC Group, the UK Government’s development finance institution on a US$100 million finance facility to FirstBank. This new facility will direct funding to women-owned and led businesses as well as to local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria. The deal will support FirstBank to deliver financial solutions that help to address the challenge of limited access to capital faced by underbanked and underserved groups in the country. As part of the new facility, a minimum of US$30 million will be allocated in the form of credit lines to women entrepreneurs.

Five feared dead, many injuries as robbers attack four banks in Edo

No fewer than five persons, including policemen, were reportedly killed during the armed robbers that attacked four commercial banks in the Uromi area of Edo State, leaving many bank customers injured. It learnt that the robbers on Thursday attacked Zenith, First Bank, UBA and Union Bank in the area, leading to confusion among residents and bank customers in the area. According to a video sent to Newsflash Nigeria, gunshots boomed in the area as residents and passersby scampered to safety. It is not clear yet the extent of damage done by the armed robbers to the banks. The Edo State Police Command spokesman, Kontongs Bello, confirmed the robbery attacks but did not give details. The suspected armed robbers were also said to have carted away unspecified huge sums of money from the affected banks. A resident of the sprawling community, the hometown of a late Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, Tony Anenih, said that the attacks on the banks were too coordinated. The source, who pleaded anonymity, described the attacks as “too coordinated in commando style and armed robbers launched the attacks simultaneously.
