COVID-19 vaccines produced by Johnson & Johnson and China''s Sinopharm, as well as the Russian-made Sputnik V, were found to provide little or no protection against the newly emerging Omicron variant, according to a study out this week. Driving the news: The study, which was published as a preprint and isn''t yet peer-reviewed, found that just three out of 13 people who were fully vaccinated with China''s Sinopharm vaccine produced neutralizing antibodies against Omicron. One out of 12 people with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine exhibited neutralizing antibodies. None of the 11 with Russia''s Sputnik V vaccine revealed protection, per the study conducted by researchers at the University of Washington and Swiss drugmaker Humabs Biomed SA. The study also found that the best protection against Omicron appears to come from both having a prior COVID-19 infection and two doses of a Pfizer vaccine. The big picture: The study comes as COVID cases are surging around the globe, appearing to be driven by the new variant.

NEW YORK , Dec. 17, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The ongoing pandemic is causing renewed concerns as new variants are becoming more prominent. To identify and track SARS-CoV-2 variants, CDC uses genomic surveillance. CDC''s national genomic surveillance system collects SARS-CoV-2 specimens for sequencing through the National SARS-CoV-2 Strain Surveillance (NS3) program, as well as SARS-CoV-2 sequences generated by commercial or academic laboratories contracted by CDC and state or local public health laboratories. CDC panel recommends Pfizer, Moderna Covid vaccine shots over J&J''s

01:19am, Friday, 17'th Dec 2021 Business Standard
Most Americans should be given the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines instead of the Johnson & Johnson shot that can cause rare but serious blood clots, U.S. health advisers recommended Thursday. The strange clotting problem has caused nine confirmed deaths after J&J vaccinations while the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines don''t come with that risk and also appear more effective, advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. It''s an unusual move and the CDC''s director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, must decide whether to accept the panel''s advice. Until now the U.S. has treated all three COVID-19 vaccines available to Americans as an equal choice, since large studies found they all offered strong protection and early supplies were limited. J&J''s vaccine initially was welcomed as a single-dose option that could be especially important for hard-to-reach groups like homeless people who might not get the needed second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna options. But the CDC''s …
The study discovered that Omicron''s ''extensive'' mutations can ''greatly compromise'' all major COVID-19 vaccines - Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.
