South Africa will offer booster doses of the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Covid-19 vaccines as the Omicron coronavirus variant drives daily infections towards record highs.

The country also received several doses of the J and J vaccine which it procured through a joint partnership with other African Union countries through the AVATT facility.

Following the outbreak of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has introduced some new modifications to the Covid protocols at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for foreign travellers. According to the statement signed by the GHS boss, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, the latest modifications have become necessary due to the upturn of COVID-19 cases in the wake of the Omicron variant. The current increase in cases together with the detection of the Omicron variant among international arrivals and the expected increase during the festive season call for urgent actions to prevent a major surge in COVID- 19 cases in Ghana , the GHS December 9 statement stated. The GHS also revealed that cases from the airport have accounted for about 60% of the total cases recorded in the country in the last two weeks. The new Covid protocols at the KIA include; The GHS has directed that all persons 18 years and above arriving in Ghana from December 12 must provide proof of full vaccination.
